Earth Hour is next week here and it is a huge issue as my building is taking part but several of my neighbours are rather upset at the 'inconvenience'.

I have been pointing out that the power plant being built not far from here, which everyone is against, would not have to go in if they did it daily instead of complaining about turning out some lights once a year.

I loved that the skyline was darker last year during Earth Hour, we do it at work too, even though we are closed, there are often people still working there (maintenance, contractors, security etc are always there plus people catching up or doing event work) so the answer to #5 is no, I do not think it is ridiculous at all

As far as #1-4
We recycle, use re-usable shopping bags rather than plastic, we buy local produce when possible, we have one car and carpool / use public transit as well walk when possible. I also work from home a fair amount which saves the environment and my commute time. We wash in cold water and air dry when possible etc

Work is very big on recycling, we actually have trashcans that are tiny but 5 recycling cans in each office and have to separate each type of recycling, in the washrooms we have separate cans for waste (not human waste obviously) and any paper towels which are recycled locally.

My BF's company is involved with fixing energy audit insulation deficiencies to save people the amount of heat/cooling they lose everyday

Our city is fairly environmentally aware, with many new buildings having geothermal heating/cooling and solar panels (including Walmart and a new condo building and the animal shelter which just has the geothermal). Each year the city has a series of 'green holidays' where they do environmental showcases (last year as a new hybrid bus which everyone wrote a message on of a promise to the environment which was wrapped with the promises under and is still in use for everyone to see with the messages, I love getting on that bus). They have a friend of the environment section on their website where they promote local events and give out new info on how to help reduce your environmental impact.

We also have a re-use centre organised through a partnership with a local environment charity and the city, kinda like a huge thrift store but they get funding from the city for each kg of waste that does not end up in landfill which they use to fund environmental projects locally.

My boyfriend and I do participate in Earth Hour every year. I don't find it an inconvenience, in fact I think its nice
It forces us to turn off the computer/tv/etc and do something together like going for a walk or playing a board game. Last year we lit some candles and just read together

I assist with recycling efforts at my work, we are always looking for new ways to "be green" at the office

Things we do at home to be earth friendly:
-recycle all soft/hard plastics, glass, paper/cardboard, metal
-return all returnable containers to the bottle depot
-use cloth bags for all of our groceries
-we wash in cold water, but don't have a clothesline so hang drying is only an option for certain items
-we replaced all our light bulbs and christmas lights with energy saving bulbs
-use "green" cleaning products as much as possible
-we have one car which we share, and when we move I will be carpooling with my boyfriend and a co-worker
-we just purchased a brand new Built-Green certified home which is heated by geothermal heating which is a fantastic and wonderful earth-friendly method of heating and cooling your home
