What are your favorites
Teaberrry Gum - yep (even tried to do the Teaberry Shuffle )
Rootbeer barrels - yep
Fruit Stripe Gum - yep

Big fan of Pixy Stix - esp. the giant ones!

Now I am all nostalgic for the days when Jess the Bread Man would drive his red panel truck around. Up in front he had this huuuuuuuuuge display of candy.

Yes, I have a major sweet tooth.

I loved the root beer barrels, loved most of the penny candy from that time. I used to stop at a candy store on my way back to school after lunch at home and buy lots of that penny candy. Remember the buttons on a long strip of paper, oh there were so many that I can't even remember them. I have had a sweet tooth all my life which is not a good thing.

The stuff mentioned above, I never even heard of because it wasn't sold here. I did see a lot of stuff that is still available even going back to the 40s - Jr Mints are still sold, as iare Mike & Ikes, and most of the list. Gum flavours come and go, and change regularly - Wrigley's Big Red is a prime example as it dates way back to at least the 50s and now, you can't find it, but could just a few years ago. Going back to the 20s category, can still get Beeman's Gum sometimes but not Black Jack which was sold up to the late 60's here; mind, I never was a gum chewer, so just remember the stuff I really liked and rarely pay attention to what is on the shelves. Jordan Almonds, lovely confection that can be found at many bulk candy retailers and often at generaly bulk food stores. Also noted wintergreen lozenges (the pink ones) - got a whole tub of those sitting here because I love wintergreen. One thing on the list that I havent seen for years are BB Bats (loved the licquorice ones) and another is Bridge Mix. Great, now I want candy

I remember the root beer barrels. I never ate them because I don't care for root beer, but my dad loved them.

It's amazing how many of the candies from pre-1920 are still around.

We had a little store around the block from us that sold penny candy. I remember the wax mustaches and wax lips...and the little wax bottles that looked like soda bottles with a liquid inside. I also remember the candy necklaces strung on elastic. I loved those giant pixi stix too!

we also had the musty little store with penny candy, growing up. swedish fish, chocolate covered pretzels, dots, candy corn, candy cigarettes, wax lips, sweet tart, jaw breakers, hot balls, most of the stuff is still available today, in dollar stores and such places. They aren't in loose bins behind glass anymore, where you can buy a penny's worth of this or that, they come in boxes or plastic usually.

I love all of those!! Especially TeaBerry Gum. They still sell it at Cracker Barrel, and I get a pack or two every time I go there. It tastes like candy cigarettes to me. In fact, I have a pack in my purse right now.

I used to buy those too! My Mom was an avid smoker, so it was my way of kind of playing along.

And you're right. They tasted horrid. Kind of chaulky if I remember correctly.

Oh my...how nostalgic! I used to love the Gold Nuggets gum, used to come in a drawstring cloth pouch. Hadn't thought of Banana Splits for a looooong time, when I saw the picture it took me back. There used to be a store way back when I was little (when dinosaurs roamed the earth) we called it "The Little Store", and they sold penny candy behind a glass counter.

This is a great thread! I remember most of those things. I also like the strips of paper covered in candy dots, (don't know what its called). They still sell them at Cracker Barrel.

When a local country store went out of business a few years back, they reduced the price of their Pixie sticks to a penny a piece. I bought 99 grape Pixie sticks - their entire stock of grape!
Hated to see that store close, though.

One of my favorite chocolates as a child was the Marathon Candy Bar. I even looked for it on a website that sells nostalgic candy, but alas, it is no longer being made.

Graham Sandwich Chocolate Bars (all time favourite long since vanished)
Coconut centres covered in vanilla, chocolate and strawberry outer shell - also vanished.

I had it as a kid and can still have it at the local mall. A nickle was hard to come by so I always opted for the biggest piece of candy around!

I remember all that wax candy too, I always used to walk around with the wax mustache until I just had to chew it for awhile and then spit it out. Also liked the little wax soda bottles with the sweet liquid inside. Those were the days
