I decide to remove her collar. It has no tags or anything because she was always trying to chew them - they drove her nuts. I finally decided there was no way she was going to escape, because the outside world scares her, and even if she does, a collar would be useless for showing she's owned, because nobody would ever be able to catch her anyway.

So I took it off, and every time I see her now I can't help but giggle. She looks so naked without her collar!

She's LOVING neck scritches now

I did the same with my Lily.... "Chicken Lily" is too scared to get within 10' of the door.
I took her collar off after she'd been wearing it for 8 months, it was weird to see her without it.

Much wore a collar most of her life, but when she started getting so old, I knew she wouldn't be darting out the door. So i took it off. She still looks nekkid.

In any case, identification is good solution and hope for lost pet. Do you guys consider tattoo or micro chipping?

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
Woohoo I love nekkid kitties..Mine done wear collars either after spending who knows how much on them just for them to get removed and lost I gave up. They try and get outside but we have 2 front doors so they dont get farther than the front porch before coming in contact with the sliding glass door.

My kitties are naked too, because the only way outside is a door that leads to a miniature room wich then leads to door that leads outside (did that make sense? lol). To escape, both door would have to be open simultaneously (wich never happens) and my cats would have to rush outside before we notice (wich is very unlikely, since both of my cats are scare of the outside world and have never tried it). But I do think about a microship. I am always thinking, what if I get robbed and they scare Zoe and Tania while the door is open? My next appointment with the vet for them both is in 2 months. I will sure ask him about microshipping!

Oh yes, both my girls are microchipped, so if they do get found and taken to a vet/shelter they can be traced back to me

All my cats go naked. It's quite shocking. Speck is especially naked since his hair is so short.

All my boys are chipped... and so far... no one has seemed terribly interested in darting out the door. They have a good deal with me. Free eats, comfy sleeps, buddies to hang with, tons of toys, a gi-normous cat tree... bird watching... and a hoomin to wait on them.

One of mine lost her break away collar a couple of weeks ago and I think she looks so naked too. I actually resorted to putting an Ejay band (a paper collar) on her with my number written on it to have something. She looked so bare and she's not microchipped yet.

I really, really think it's a good idea to keep collars on your cats even though they are microchipped. It's a visual that helps people tell them apart from homeless cats and hopefully make an effort to pick them up and find the owner. So many people still don't know about microchips too.
Cats that appear to be owned may also get better treatment if they end up in a shelter. My local animal control shelter will euthanize ill and injured cats right away unless they appear to be owned. A collar is a pretty sure sign that the cat does belong to someone. A pound that I used to work with would only scan cats that they thought could belong to someone. (They were supposed to scan all of them but didn't)
There are a lot of homeless cats where I live and I usually don't bother to catch them and bring them home. But a few months ago when a cat with a collar showed up at my feeding station I did pick him up and brought him home to find his owner since I thought there was a chance that someone was missing him. Had he not worn a collar I wouldn't have grabbed him. I would think that other people think the same way I do.

Since a lot of people let their cats outside to roam the streets of course not every cat with a collar and tag is lost and missing. So to let people know that my cats are not suposed to be outside and are in fact missing I have the text "I'm lost. Help me get home" on the cats' tags along with phone number and address.

With Lily, she would never let anybody approach her so it doesn't really matter in her case. And any shelter that euthanises an animal without checking for a microchip is neglectful. Cats react in different ways when caught, and there's no guarantee that a cat is feral just because it's at a shelter.

The big problem with the microchips is that they're not regulated - different manufacturers require scans on different frequencies, and most of the individual places (vet offices, shelters) don't scan for all the possible frequencies. I've had zero success getting Sophie to wear a collar, so I was happy to get the chip (a gift from my mom - yay for kitty Grandma!), but the vet was quick to give me the scoop that while excellent, they're not infallible. Some of the chip manufacturers offer additional "Lost Pet" services at low cost though (lost pet notification to local shelters and vet offices, lost pet insurance for medical or transport costs incurred, etc).
