Today has been the first truly gorgeous day in a long time, and I had just returned from taking Imogen on her first ever "walk" (details on that later), when I decided it would be a great time to spring-clean out my fridge and take some old things to the compost can outside. Of course, the moment I got out on my patio, I heard a pitiful kitty cry, which I assumed was just Imogen howling at me from inside, as it was coming from the direction of the open window in my bathroom (too high for her to jump out, don't worry). She always cries whenever I leave her for more than 5 seconds, poor thing. Anyway, I was going about my business amidst soft meows when the vent grate next to my compost can suddenly rattled. This is the vent that leads to the basement-ceiling crawl space of pipes and cement blocks and other cat-nook goodness. And, of course, the flap only goes one way on that thing. I poked it open and saw a velvety black paw inside. It belonged to a sweet, albeit haughty black-as-night stray whom the upstairs neighbors have taken to feeding on their porch. I immediately ran for the broomstick inside (I wanted something to pry it open with for fear of frightened kitty claw retaliation) and let her out. She slid out the tiny hole, darted up the back stairs to get her dinner, stopped halfway and gave me a lick on the hand through the railing, then went about her evening without a backwards glance.

So, yes, my good deed for the day is accomplished

Oh, and Imogen's "walk" consisted mostly of her riding on my shoulder while I strolled around a few blocks. I did let her down on the sidewalk of the bridge over the creek, and she relaxed and sharpened her claws and even followed me a few steps here and there. In all, not a bad start. (And yes, she was on a leash the whole time
)
