I posted a little while ago regarding Izzy's eye developing a rustic/orange pigmentation in the right corner.

We took him to an ophthalmologist and the diagnosis is "melanosis" and their recommendation is to treat the pigmented cells with a laser, which will stop the pigmentation from spreading. We were told that if left untreated that there is a high probability that it can turn into a melanoma and eventually metastasize to other organs.

We were also told that the procedure is non-invasive and that it would not impact his vision. He would also need drops and other care during recovery. They also mentioned that the have "never" seen the pigmentation/melanosis get worse once treated.

I hate to put him through an unnecessary procedure.

Sometimes I feel like they (vets) are more concerned about revenue more than the helath of the animal as we had a bad experience in the past with a vet. ER visit (w/another cat).

I was wondering if anyone has had a similar experience w/this? And how did you proceed?

Regards,
Paul

I wholeheartedly agree about getting a 2nd opinion.

My oldest girl was about 9 or 10 yrs when I noticed the rust spot on her eye. Took her to the Vet Eye Doc and he thought it was just benign pigment changes but did warn that it could be iris melanoma and the only way to be safe was to remove her eye. From all that I had read, I decided not to proceed with eyeball removal. She lived until 17 yrs (passed not at all related to this). I have another 15 yr old cat who has a few of these spots on her iris and I'm just leaving them be.

Of course every cat is different and I'm not saying that what mine had/have is the same as yours but I'd really consider a second opinion before proceeding with the laser treatment.
