Feliway for Veline Herpes

Thank you ALL so much for helping me through what may (and probably is) feline herpes with my little Butters.

As I posted in that post, I did order a Feliway. Right now, I think one might be enough, since he is quarantined to our upstairs (which is a bedroom, office, hallway, and bathroom).

But we have over 2400 square feet of house, including the basement where their litterboxes are. How many of these should I invest in? If it's good for the cats, I have no problem buying many in bulk (one per room and two for the basement even if needed). I was just wondering what would be overkill and what would work.

And do the fillers last 30 or 60 days? I will have to make a habit to change them at the first of every month, when everyone gets flea meds.

Thank you again, and this site is going to be my saving grace.

Thank you so much! Do you think it would be sufficient to just have it in the main areas of the home where the cats stay the most (living room, bedroom, etc., but not the basement), or should I blanket the house with them?

I would just do the rooms where they spend the most time, we have one in the living room and one in the cat room (they have their cat trees etc in there so play in there a lot)

I will post this separately for everyone but Feliway are offering a free sample spray on their website when you buy a diffuser

since he is contained in the bathroom, and your worry is the transition to the new home, I would put it that room while he is in there, then move it to the room where he spends the most amount of time when the time comes...
With time he will become more secure, and much less stressed. You do NOT need to have feliway diffuser on the house 24x7 just because he has herpes...
Yes, right now that he has a flare up, and is pretty stressed out with the moving it is an excellent thing to have, but it is not a permanent necessity. Feliway is great for times of stress - moving, new additions to the house, sickness, flare up, etc. The herpes virus is highly responsive to stress, so minimizing stress is a must, but normal living conditions are ok....

Actually the diffuser says it is good for 650-750 sq ft. I have one upstairs and one downstairs.

Yeah I thought it was around 500sq ft - that was why i had one by the cat room (right beside our bedroom) and the livingroom which would cover the other end of our place

This is good to know. Our home is around 2200-2400 square feet, so I'm glad I don't have to buy 20 of these things!

It would be good to have a few of them for when Butters is finally able to come out and meet the rest of the family. It will help everyone be a bit calmer, I think.

I don't know where you ordered them from, but I buy mine at entirelypets.com. There's always some kind of sale going on and they have free shipping if you buy more than a certain amount. I get emails from them all the time with discount codes in them. Surprisingly, I don't get them for my herpes girl, but for my old-lady scaredy cat! It helps them both, though.

Amazon is cheaper, FYI by a little over $3... It fluctuates, but right now it is cheaper. It also has free shipping...
I would just get a couple... IMO it is not necessary to do the entire house, but that is just me... I only do the places where they stay the most amount of time. Definitely the bathroom for now, and then Wherever they hang out after that - the bedroom? Living room? But you want to put close to him - wherever he spends the most amount of time, that's where...

He will get his confidence going, and stress will no longer be that much of an issue, so...
Anyways, just my 2 cents... I wouldn't spend a lot of $$$ on it doing the whole house - your kitty will be well soon, the stress of the move is temporary, until he acquire his confidence...

I did end up getting mine from Amazon, just because that's where I could order both it and the Lysine, although they are coming from different "vendors" via Amazon, if you will. The Lysine should be here by the end of the week.

I did want to clear up something -- I think I must have had a typo in my original post (but am too lazy to look to find out ). He's not confined to just the bathroom right now -- he's in our entire upstairs, which has our bedroom, our office/den area, a longish open hallway, and the upstairs bathroom. So it's a sizeable area, and the other two cats are downstairs. I did just get the one, but I was going to put it next to his litterbox / food area, which is probably about 10 feet from the bed where he sleeps with us. He seems to spend most of his time on the steps waiting patiently for us to come home, though...I'd say the entire area is about 700 sq. feet, but that's just a guess, since the first floor is larger, and the house, minus the basement, is 1700 sq. feet. *shrugs* Still think just the one will do the job?

Awww.... Is there a place to plug in between the steps and the bed/food, litterbox?

Actually there is...it's behind a small chair, though. Do you think that's ok? It's right at the top of the stairs, so when he's at the bottom of the stairs, he's probably the same(ish) distance away from the plug as he is when he's at the litterbox.

Yeah, I think that's a good place, so this way it is always somewhat close to him, no matter where he is.

It will work as long as it is not completely blocked( of course I would not recommend anything in a outlet be completely blocked or covered)
