I think my cat talks

Hey everyone. I have a cat, Charlie, who is about 8 months old, but he is no kitten. Hes about 10 pounds, very playful, full of energy, and loves to explore. We got him when he was 8 weeks old, and he has lived with us since. He was litter trained when we got him and has always had a healthy appetite. About a month ago, my fiance and I were lying in bed when he jumped up in bed, woke me up and told me he heard the cat say "hello". I waited and listened, but didnt hear it, until the following day. Since that night, Charlie goes in the basement of our home (which is old), he will get up on the cement legde, look at who knows what and talk. He says "Hell - low", "Mama", and a relative claims to have heard him say "Help me". I dont know the history here, but it is sometimes frightening. He will do it 10-12 times a day, always on the ledge, and in the dark. There are no bats or animals in there, nothing like that. I dont know what to think of it. It doesnt bother me that he does it, more so I just want to know why or what is going on. Everyone is convinced he is seeing something or talking to someone. Its as if there is a child down there talking when he does it, its so clear it doesnt even sound like a cat. I also have a friend of about 20 years who will no longer come to my house. She claimed (this was before we had a cat) that she would hear things at night when she was trying to sleep. She said she would hear breathing and scratching. She also always pointed it out to one corner and said that it was in the basement. I dont know if its a coincedence that she heard things, and now I have a cat who is acting beyond strange. So for my own sanity I would appreciate any feedback on this.

MY daughter once had a dog who would stand and bark at something in the corner that wasn't there. My daughter was having a major problem living in that house. When she came home windows would be up that had been down, doors open that she had left shut, many things that could not be explained. She moved and then the dog was fine. I think there are some things we just don't have explanation for and what your cat is doing may be one of them. Try keeping your cat out of the basement and see if he still does it. I hope you get a logical explanation, but I doubt you will. It may be something you experience as long as you live in the house where you are.

I've heard lots of cats that sound like they're talking, when they're actually meowing. My Ichi sometimes sounds like a spoiled child whining. And YouTube has lots of talking cats.
My cats often look at something that isn't there but I believe they're sensing an insect or mouse crawling and creeping behind the wall or under ground. It's a cat thing.

Yeah, some cats just sound like they're talking when they're actually just meowing. Maybe you should try recording it and see if people can agree on what the cat is saying

You know, I actually had a friend tell me about YouTube and the talking cats. I went on there to see other videos and I have to say it only made it more eerie because those cats still sound like cats! Charlie sounds like a person when he does it lol.

I don't have any answers, but years ago my cat Siamie was begging for some kind of people food that I didn't think she should have. Finally, I gave in (I'm a pushover) and said "I'll give you a bite, but don't tell daddy." And she said "I won't." I think maybe I screamed, because she's never talked to me in a human voice again.

Thank you for sharing such an interesting story. I'd love to see a video of your talking cat!

My little Scooter talks. He says "feed me, go out, and noooo." This is after he has gotten frustrated that I am not moving fast enough for him. Once or twice he has said something that sounded like "Mama."

My cats don't speak english like your cat sounds like.

I do have conversations with Taffy, which can last for hours.

Things we talk about.

- Going to france
- Girls
- If he wants anything from the shops
- What film we should watch.
- If either of us are scared.

Bollo and Bubbles come and guide me when i need help.

My husband taught Forrest to say "Mom" and "Momma" when he wants food or me to do something (like open a door, etc.) for him.

When Forrest was a kitten and would meow/howl for food my Husband or I would say Mom or Momma until he repeated it correctly and then we would feed him. He learned REALLY fast.

It was cute at first, but now a bit annoying. Especially when on the phone and he is loudly saying Mom...MOM...MOM! People think I have an impatient child. OK...well I guess he is in a way.

I think my cats always just want to talk. They recognize that people communicate with different sounds and they try to imitate. Bradley has a very broad range of sounds that she makes. Someday, I might be surprised!

I think cats are very clever little animals and if they keep up trying to talk like humans, pretty soon they will. It's not just the 'feed me now', 'play with me now' stuff that I would be interested in but their perspectives on deep philosophical questions. Like 'why are we here?', I'm guessing cats would probably philosophize about how humans wonder about such unnecessary things!

Congratulations on your poltergeist and talking cat! (Cats don't normally have conversations with their prey or with other cats. They talk to humans and, apparently in your case, former humans).

I hope you can enjoy this interesting situation. It seems like the cat has a good relationship with the poltergeist, so I don't think you have anything to be concerned about. In my (limited) experience, ghosts don't bother you unless you annoy them. You can coexist. I suggest you put "Beetlejuice" at the top of your Netflix list.

I also recommend that you and your fiancé keep your behavior polite and G-rated around the cat, because you never know when he might start telling tales to your guests.

PS: Are you in New England? This sort of thing isn't uncommon in the old houses here....

ok... i got goosebumps!! My mom's dog use to bark and scratch at the floor... she later found out their was an infestation of termites in that spot! Under the floor!
... Now here i am trying to get Neko to say "mom" I kinda hope she sticks to "meow"

Oh I firmly believe that cats and dogs see and sense things that we don't. Perhaps there is a spirit there that is communicating with the cat and vice versa. You should get it checked out.

Apologies for not reading this whole thread, only the first few posts, but just wanted to say that we tend to make sounds that aren't really there, in fact we physically do. I'm a sound engineer, and I the brain fills in on sounds at certain frequencies that aren't truly there anyway, but as with cats and thinking they are talking, it's just you actually purposely filling in the games. People can hear anything they want to, in fact when playing back white noise, everyone hears different oddities in the simple sound, due to them getting bored quickly and trying to give it more flavour, hell people hear voices in white noise, but that's not what I'm talking about.

I cat can technically say "Hey dude, how's it going?", if you really want them to, but phsyically they are unable to produce accurate sounds through meowing, but your brain IS able to make those sounds up instead.

And re: cats and dogs staring at stuff, well the most likelt explanation for that is sensory overload. Lots of animals go through a stage of becoming overloaded temporary by their senses, some just stare at the wall while their brain is working at other things. Good example is why cats get hit by cars on the road, they don't chase after cars and walk into it on purpose like dogs (yes, most dogs will basically suicide vs cars), they freeze because their brain is trying to work out distance and velocity, as well as their senses becoming overwhelmed by sight and hearing at the same time. There's a lot to process, and they stand there like frozen dolls and get BAM, hit by cars. That's how most cats die from car impacts, by stopping IN FRONT of the car to make further calculations.

There's more evidence pointing to not extra senses (ie detecting ghosts), but rather current senses being used TOO much, or the brain doing other things. Just my 2 pennies worth.

Note: Sorry my English is bad
