My husband and I want to take up the shrubs across the back of the house and put some new ones there. I want something that is low growing and does not have to be trimmed on a regular basis. Of course, it has to be a type of plant that is not toxic to cats. I also want something that can provide some shade and yet is not really bushy at the bottom We live in the country and I want to have something I can see under and be sure no snakes or animals are hiding under them. Are there any suggestions.

If you want plant suggestions, you need to at least share what zone you're in. If you can include more information about your area, such as soil type, that will help, too. What side of the house is this on? How many hours of sun? How is the drainage?

If you have any in mind already that you like, look it up. Look at the family the shrub (or any other plant) falls into and if it is known to be toxic or has any members that are.

I live in zone 8. The plants would be on the west side of the house. They would get full afternoon sun. The drainage is very good and the plants would be mulched with pine straw.

I just googled "non poisonous shrubs for cats" and a whole bunch of sites came up. I think it was Gardnersweb had some good information.

Also Cat Fanciers Association I think has quite a bit of info. Also the SPCA site.

Hope this helps.

I think what I will have to do is visit the nursery and pick out something I like. Then I will come home and do the research on it. I want to be really sure I am not planting something that will harm my cats since they live in the yard where the shrubs will be planted.
