So worried about Wellington

Wellington has not been himself for awhile, but I thought we had found the cause when his eye infection was diagnosed and cleared. This last week, though, he has been very lethargic and off his food. He has not even come up to bed with the others but stayed down on the sofa. He felt clammy to me on Tuesday morning so I took him to the vet, who found a slight fever (39.6) but nothing else, no blockages, nice pink mouth etc. So he has been on daily antibiotic injections, and had an immediate favourable reaction. By yesterday (Thursday) morning he was eating again, and seemed much more active. His fever was almost gone too. After his injection yesterday they said not to bring him till Saturday. But today he has gone right back to sleeping all morning and has eaten nothing since last night. I don't think he used the litter box in the night and he certainly hasn't this morning. He seems uncomfortable, twitching and moving in his sleep. I took his temperature which is 38.8, the same as yesterday. I have made an appointment for this afternoon, five hours away, and I am so nervous.

Biscotte keeps going and licking him and he is ignoring her. So I am giving her extra cuddles too. Could I have some vibes for my big boy?

You're doing all the right things and taking excellent care of him, which is wonderful!

It's natural to fear the worst, but that's rarely the reality — especially when the cat is being watched and cared for so well. Whatever it is, you're going to nip it in the bud, and that's always best.

Please keep us posted and good luck today!

Good news and bad news. We went to the vet and Wellington had a blood test. The good news is that all his values and levels came back normal, and they did a load of tests and nothing showed up. But his temperature was up again to 39.9.

He has now had an anti-inflammatory to try and bring the temp down. When we came home he was hungry and went to his bowl but only ate a little. However, at least he ate. He is now curled up on my bed asleep again. I take him back tomorrow for another antibiotic injection and a case discussion with all the vets.

I am so frightened. I almost wish the blood tests had shown something, so we would know what we are fighting. This fever and lethargy has me scared silly.

Just lots of and , Jenny. I hope the anti-inflammatory does the trick, and also that you find some answers that can be dealt with -- without too much fuss for your sweet boy.

Feel better soon, Wellington!

How frustrating. It does sound like he has some sort of infection. We had a problem with Much having a generalized infection. She stopped eating, was lethargic and had a fever. It took a round of antibiotics to finally lick it. I hope that you find something treatable soon.

Oh the worst is when they're sick and the tests don't indicate why!

for Wellington - AND Biscotte!

...and for you. And

So mainly good news. His temperature is back to normal for the last 24 hours, but I must keep him on Tolfadine anti-inflammatories for three days (dangerous to do it for longer). He is eating, though not yet in the quantity or at the speed that is normal for him. And he even pooped once, yesterday afternoon. Poor boy, I heard the pellets hitting the tray from the other room, they were so hard. So he is also on a laxative for two days to ease his system.

But we still do not know the cause. If his temp remains normal I will just monitor him carefully. If not, the vets will do another series of tests for various parasites and for non-bacterial infection. As he is not currently taking his prednisone for asthma, his breathing is a bit laboured at times and he wheezes sometimes. But it is not too bad at the moment, as the weather is getting better.

So all things being equal, we go back to the vet on Tuesday unless I am worried before that.

I missed this thread, too, and am glad to hear that there's been some improvement. , Wellington!

I missed this before, too. I'm glad he's doing better. Have x rays been done to check for blockage?

I'm glad to know he's pooped some now, but I wonder if there's more in there, built up. X rays may show more, and possibly ultrasound after that.

He is much better today, did a really big poop last night, and immediately chased Biscotte all over the bedroom - I let her in as they were really missing each other and I thought he was well enough to have company. For the first time last night they slept together as they are used to, on the bed. For a week he has just wanted to be left alone. He is eating better too.

He is still on Tofladine anti-inflammatories, and a mild laxative. Both tablets will end tonight. The crunch will be what happens to his temperature after that. But he is definitely feeling better and will go to the vet tomorrow for a check.

That's encouraging, Jenny! Keeping the flowing.

Just back from the vet. His fever seems to have gone but he remains very constipated. So no more antibiotics or anti-inflammatories. He would not eat much this morning, and is very clingy. They did an ultrasound, but couldn't find anything wrong except the constipation. He has lost 15 grams (around a quarter pound) in a week - not much but a sign he is not eating properly. I have a different laxative to give him and must take him back in two days, enough time hopefully to restart his system. He did eat when he came home though, a good sign.

Sending more vibes for Wellington

Its frustrating when they are sick for no obvious reason. Hopefully once his constipation is sorted out he will be back to his old self.

Isn't it funny how such things can make you happy? At 15.30 this afternoon he had a good poop, after two doses of Laxatone paste. Poor boy, I have had to squirt it into his mouth and he hates it, as he won't eat it on his food. But it seems to work. He will have another dose tonight, as I think there is more in there. When I cuddled him today he turned over to have his tummy rubbed, and really went crazy with purring when I really rubbed and kneaded hard, trying to manipulate whatever is stuck inside. He seemed to know it was doing him good. His fever has not returned, so I feel much more optimistic.

Yay for Poop!! Keeping the flowing, Jenny!
