I may be moving, but I am having trouble finding housing that is multi-pet friendly. I'll have a small dog & probably 6 cats (depends on who I get "custody" of).

Most places say 2 cats OR one small dog.

Are there any online databases? I've been trying to Google to find more info but am coming up short.

Based on suburban Illinois - it's going to be very tough. Most urban and suburban counties say only 3 pets per home (not counting new litters) - sometimes it's not strictly enforced, until/unless someone complains. Most condos/apartments will be around 2 pets per unit, if allowing pets at all.

Good luck on your search.

Local shelters may also have lists of pet friendly places.
The local shelter is hard to get ahold of, but I'll try them. Thanks for the links to sites to try.

I have to look into pet limits, I know one local town here has a limit 3 of any species (not just 3 animals total). If you talk to the city, they'll let you fudge it & have 1 dog + 5 cats, so long as they aren't a nuisance.

Before moving into our home, we had a HELL of a time finding appropriate housing. The only places who really wanted to rent to us were dumps. There are a few things you could try that works for us.

1) Omit the amount of pets that you have unless they outright ask. Don't lie though.
2) Offer an additional amount of the deposit as a "pet deposit".
3) Offer an additional amount per month for rent.
4) Get people to be referances for you, stating that you are a good, RESPONSIBLE pet owner.
5) I'm assuming that your animals are all spayed and neutered, so show vet records to prove/explain this. It shows responsibility.

Good luck!

We have a "don't ask, don' tell" agreement with our landlord. We have been here 5 years and they have never said a word. I doubt we will get our deposit back, though. The woman got remarried and is suddenly money hungry, so I figure she will mention it when time comes for us to move out. That will probably not be for quite some time, though. She can keep it, I don't care. At least she has never hassled us about the cats.

It's very difficult to find people who are willing to rent to people with pets. When we were renting a house, the landlord stated that he didn't want any animals in the house at all. But then we got Hydrox (and hid him every time the landlord came around, which wasn't often, thank goodness).

Good luck in finding a place.

One of my co-workers is moving and found a house that accepts their two dogs and one cat. Their current rentail they paid to have the yard fenced for the dogs!

One glimmer of home with the recession it might be easier to find a landlord willing to rent a place?? Otherwise I would follow the recommendations of the others posted above.

Good luck!

Good luck finding a place. Even around here its hard to find a place that will allow cats. For some reason land lords find them horrible compared to dogs. My dog has caused more damage than the cats ever could. I would just look for something that doesnt say anything about pets in the ad and get information about it. I always look at it as the worst they can say is no. Be honest because if you lie to them it could make things worse and cause you to get kicked out of the place.
We got lucky our landlord doesnt care how many pets we have, he knows that Im a sucker for a stray and if one comes around Ill feed it and or take it in and get it s/n and add it to my collection. LOL.

Check on craigslist, Nat. Just be sure to thoroughly check out any place. I can practically guarantee you that you will not find an apartment like in an apartment complex that will let you have that many animals. Your best bet would be to check out duplexes or private houses....maybe even trailers

Natalie - are you staying in the area, or moving up toward the Twin Cities? Let me know if you're staying around here, we moved over here now & I might have a name of a landlord in Fmt that you could call that rents houses.

PM me & let me know!

Nat, are you absolutely sure that you want to rent? It's a buyers market now, and owning your own place could be the answer to your pet prayers. Down payments for homes wouldn't be much more than a security deposit (especially one that includes pet damage.) Owning your own home also would help you build a credit rating. I know in Michigan, there are low down payment/low interest loans for first time home buyers with limited incomes, and there are tax breaks this year for home purchases, both first time buyers and other buyers.

Good luck....please keep us posted!

The problem with buying a house is - I don't know what I want to be when I "grow up". I don't know if I'm going to like living in the city, this city. I don't know that I want to commit myself to living there. I don't know where my life is going. It's a great time to buy if I knew where I was going, where I want to be....but I just don't know.

The problem with renting is that evil 6 letter word: d-e-c-l-a-w.
I will not mutilate my babies for anyone!
