Hi everyone,
I am due to have my thyroid removed (well whats left of it
). I got my op date today 20th April, I have to be there at 7am. I have been for my pre-op today, had bloods taken an ecg and a good discussion with the ENT nurse. I am really worried about surgery but today has made me feel a little more relaxed, the nurse explained everything to me and has also said the aneasthetist will come and see me before I go down for my surgery and so will my surgeon. They will give me a good pre med so she said I should not be anxious at all by that point
My surgeon wanted to leave some of my thyroid behind (for some reason I only have half of one and it is full of cysts and damaged I also keep having bouts of thyroiditis-hence the removal) I have some reservations on this and have been advised that if he leaves some behind this could cause me problems later on. So I am hoping to discuss having a total thyroidectomy with him, I know this means being on thyroid meds but I have been so ill recently that I would rather take the meds than have to be ill again.
I have an appointment with my GP on monday as the nurse told me I am running a temperature and I feel a bit flu-like which is usually what happens before I get the thyroiditis, so hopefully my gp will give me some antibiotics to clear it up before it gets too bad or else this could delay my op.
I'm still very nervous but I have had some great responses on here off people and alsomy thyroid forum and I do feel alot more relaxed, so thankyou to all those who have shown me support. I', hoping to only have to stay in hospital one night all being well and atleast I have a few weeks to prepare myself. x

Its really not nice, it knocked me off my feet for weeks last time, took my doctor ages to eventually refer me and find out the problem,my husband has had to have so much time off work, we have 3 children and when I had it I couldn't do anything. Our doctors here aren't that UP on thyroid disease and it really did take me ages to get an answer. The eariest I can get an appointment with my gp is monday, so I am hoping that I don't get it bad this time before then, my pre-op nurse said I need antibiotics to stop it from coming to full blown thyroiditis but getting our gp's to give you antibiotics is like...well..it doesn't happen very often. I really am hoping when I have the op then that's it, hence why I don't want any thyroid left behind. Thanks for your reply.x

I'm sure all will go well.
If you cut out refined sugar two weeks (even one week helps) before your surgery, you will heal much faster. I had a friend who was in a surgical clinical study (wisdom teeth removal) and the different results between the sugar-eaters and non-sugar-eaters was a REAL eye opener! Try to get a lot of rest and let us know how it goes.
