Still getting used to the SLR thing. Found out for the first time that it's harder to photograph around snow. I've been spoiled by point-and-shoot cameras, lol. But it was a beautiful day and I've been promising the kids the chance to spend some time outside. They're normally indoor cats, but sometimes when the weather is nice, I like to go outside with them and watch them just be prehistoric cats.

Willow is what I call the "stayer" or the long distance runner (I'm talking in racing terms, lol). When she first gets outside, she tends to do, like, nothing. After about 10 minutes or so, she starts warming up, and her energy level begins rising, until all you have to do is look at her and she flicks her tail and zips away (fortunately I have back-up: one look at my dog, Jake, and she settles down and is easy to catch)

Molly is the other one I can trust off-leash. She's too scardy to venture far, and when anything scares her (like my foot crunching on snow, for example), she bolts back for the door. She always wants to go outside, will stand against the front door and just stare outside, but when she gets the opportunity to go out, she tends to want back in pretty quickly. I think all she wants is a couple good rolls to get impressively dirty. Not so much interested in bugs. What kind of excuse for a cat is she? lol

I cannot trust Buffy off-leash, so whenever I take her outside (which is rarely, since she's the door-darter and doesn't need any encouragement), she's always on-leash. When I get the urge to take the cats outside, I try to wait until Buffy is sleeping somewhere out of sight and won't be able to see or hear me bringing two cats outside and leaving her behind, lol. She's been pretty darn good lately (and she's not fond of cold; she's actually an addict for heat and warmth), so I figured I might as well give her a treat.

I'll start off with Willow, since I brought her out first (with Molly, but technically, Willow went outside first, lol)

I laugh looking at this one. Willow doesn't meow, like, ever, but when she does, it's more what we call a turkey gobble. Her tongue tends to come out, curled, and away goes the patented Turkey Gobble. We mock her all the time. She wasn't making a sound in this, was probably just licking her lips, but it's the clearest shot I've ever gotten of her tongue sticking out.

(and by the way, you'll see the window screen behind her that shows why we can't have open windows anymore (at least not downstairs, where windows are level with the outside ground). Every single window downstairs has a hole in some shape or form, and the window can't even be open a crack, as the kitties WILL use their fat heads to wedge it open further)

At this point, she started wanting to come inside.

About a month ago, we petsitted my brother's two cats. After they left, we suddenly realized that Willow has HUGE eyes. We always knew they were big, but man, after spending 2 days with 4 cats with normal eyes (brother's 2 cats plus our other 2 cats), we realized Willow is descended from sort of owl creature.

Molly has never climbed a tree in her life (well, my sister met her for the first time when Molly was stuck in a tree at 5 months of age and couldn't get down; she was up there for at least 5 hours, but other than that, she has never voluntarily climbed a tree). I now have proof that she actually has aspirations, lol

This is my favorite shot of the day. Molly decided to book it at one point, go around to the backyard, and then she sat crying at the back door. When she realized I'd followed her, she came back to the fence and was all affectionate ("OMG, I'm dying in this blizzard! If you truly love me, allow me to wallow in warmth again!")

Making it very obvious what she wants ("This door is still not open."). I did let her back inside, and that's when I went and got Buffy.

"Well, cheeze it, I thought this was gunna be momma-baby time? What's THIS one doing out here? Make her vanish, immediately!" (you can pick which one is saying that, lol)

There isn't much from Buffy. Black cats are hard enough to photograph, try doing it against a backdrop of white snow and a harsh sun that's in the process of going to bed, lol. But here's what I did get.

She wanted to jump off the side of the steps into the little garden/forest thing we have (all these years and I still don't know what to call it, lol). She was quickly brought to her senses on why that was an ill-informed idea.

"Baked vegetation!" *crunch crunch*

Being typical Buffy, she finished off the "photo-shoot" with a hearty shake that left a creepy, awkward image.

Exactly what I was thinking, she is so beautiful!

Molly looks a LOT like my Mom's kitty, Orbie. You're babies are precious!

Wow your girls are beauties and I'm jealous, I wish I could take my girls out but they are such scaredy cats, they howl if I try to put their harness on them.

Great pics!!! I love Buffy because she is SO beautiful and I have a tendency to love the black kitties...
But oh my, that Molly is quite delectable too. And I don't mean to discount Willow... I am just a short-hair kind of cat lover...
Tell Willow she is gorgeous too.
