I've been asked by someone about blue eyes in cats. I thought I remembered reading that blue eyes were only in white and pointed cats. Is this correct? She saw an ad for a "rare" blue eyed gray kitten. From the picture, the blue eyes aren't really clear, and the cat doesn't look pointed (is pointing something you notice in a kitten?).

Thanks.

Thanks. To add insult to injury, this poor excuse for a backyard breeder must then be hoping to foist the kitten upon unsuspecting people before it's ready to leave it's mother

Sorry not true. Blue eyes can and do (rarely) occur in non pointed or non-white cats.

I owned an odd-eye black & white cat (one blue and one green eye). Also in the Japanese Bobtail breed, there are many other color cats with weird eye color combinations. I've seen a picture of a red tabby JBT with blue eyes!

But since it is so rare, most likely the "rare" blue eyed kitten (who looks younger than 8 weeks) will most likely have eyes of another color as s/he gets older, right? So it would be best to advise a person not to buy a cat based on the blue eye trait until the cat was older (without even going into the rightness/wrongness of buying a moggie).

Agreed. Definitely wait until the kitten is older.

There is actually a breed called Ojos Azules, which means blue eyes. The cats are not white or pointed, and the breed is very rare. They can be long- or shorthairs. It's in the 'Preliminary New Breeds'-category in TICA. SH in TICA, LH in TICA and some general info.

Attitude had blue eyes until she was older. This was her at 8 weeks.

They aren't blue anymore. This was taken a few weeks ago.

Not all cats have blue eyes for long. This is Nuts at 8 weeks as you can see his eyes are not blue.

I would wait until the kitten is older. as you see yes can change with age, especially blue eyes.

I know someone who has a red tabby with blue eyes. He's "just" a trailer court stray, no special breed. And my Silka has blue eyes, though she's kinda sorta pointed. I mean, she's a dilute tortie but is a bit darker on her points. And she really looked Siamese when she was a baby. She was a farm kitten. It's rare but sometimes "just plain cats" have blue eyes.
