Thanks to all of the wonderful knowledge on these forums I've become a LOT more conscious of what's on the label of Abbey and Kaeli's food. I'm trying to learn to read the label for wet cat food. I think I've got how to read the dry food sorted pretty well.

Just a few questions as I compare labels:

No corn, soy, wheat - that's all good right?
What about potato starch or ground rice, are these ok?
And what about all the veggies and berries listed on some of the labels?

And on the meats - is just one meat type per can good, or a blend of meats better? (chicken, lamb, turkey... fish?)

And what about pouch food versus canned food - does it matter so long as the kitties like it and the ingredients show good?

Thanks for any more light you can shed on this whole kitty food conundrum for me.

No corn or wheat is something I like in a wet food but some solid to good foods have wheat gluten as a gravy binding agent in a chunk or shredded food.. Pouches are more likely to have wheat gluten , potato starch or oat fiber to bind

I will use foods with rice and potato and YES I prefer ground rice as most cats eat it better than the fragment s that can be seen... When I look at foods I aim for ones with grain no higher than 5th or 6th on the list if any ...

Most foods will be a blend of meats ... ie chicken , chicken liver and beef and beef liver .. unless you have an allergy kitty these are fine... I only feed a fish main ingredient food a few times a week as I have PH and UTI issues plus allergies

The veggies and berries in there are usually in only very small amounts, they are there to add more specific vitamins. I had my cats on Wellness, which has these, it never did any harm. Unless the meat is raw it will have lost some of its nutrients and so they add those nutrients back through supplements as well.

Even raw has lost considerable nutrient value... add vitamins and minerals are fine ... veggies are good for fiber mainly as are berries in the amounts that most are added ... thou I have seen many foods with veggies in the first six ingredients IMHO a no go .. Harm only if you have a allergic or cat with issues ( though some issues require higher fiber or carb levels )..IMHO treat veggies and berry s like grain fine if not a main ingredient ( to me potatos are a veggie and a starch in one)
