Bah. They are such a joke. What is "Best Picture" for anyway?? Avatar is the highest grossing movie of all time, I think it's caused a huge change in the way people make movies, and expect to watch movies with the 3D technology they used, and yet Hurt Locker took away all the awards?!? James Cameron should have at least gotten Best Director! Crazy....

I refused to watch it anyway because I hate Steve Martin, and I don't care for Alec Baldwin much either, but I'm certainly glad I didn't watch it!

I couldn't agree more! Avatar deserved the award for "Best Picture". It was an amazing movie!

I saw both movies- and both were good. I liked "The Hurt Locker" more, and think it is well deserving of being the best picture. I actually expected "Avatar" to win. I'm pleased "The Hurt Locker" won the award, even more so considering it wasn't released into the theaters anywhere near as widely as "Avatar" was.

I don't much care for anything Hollywood does. We have not been to the movies in years.

IMO, Hollywood is irrelivant.

Did that film with George Clooney win where he's employed to go around companies to make them redundant, because if it did it shouldn't have. It was terrible!

45 minutes into the film i was still waiting for something to happen???

Saw George Clooney in O Brother Where Art Thou on TV this weekend. It was lousy as well!

Liked the music tho.

We used to watch the awards shows, but gave up on them years ago. I've not seen Avatar yet, but will eventually.

Looks like I didn't miss much last night by not watching it.

I saw a little bit of the start. I just like to see what the actresses are wearing! Sandra Bullock looked gorgeous as always. Glad she won too.

Otherwise, yes, complete waste of time and it's so overblown with their sense of self importance. Seriously, what do these people do for a living that's so darn important and worthy of all this constant attention?

I personally thought Avatar was COMPLETELY over rated. I will admit, it was a visually stunning movie, but the storyline was incredibly hokey and not even slightly original.

I personally think that celebrity is out of control. But guess what? Most of america is responsible for creating celebrity. Buying those mags at the checkout stand and watching Access hollywood and ET. So we get what we ask for I guess.

I think that the awards shows are nice. If you can ignore the celebrity foolishness (which is why I don't watch the pre-oscar red carpet) of "what are you wearing?" "Who are you with?" blah, blah, blah....

I wouldn't want to live in a society that didn't place a certain value on the performing arts. I watch the Kennedy Center Honors, The Mark Twain prize, Tony awards, Rock and Roll hall of fame...I watch it all. I really like seeing artists talk about other artists.

Thats part of what I liked about last night was when they had peers of the lead actors and actresses say a few words about the nominees. That was really great. When you realize that other people in that profession are inspired and appreciate what others have done with a particular performance. I guess its just the frustrated artist in me.....

Has anyone seen The Hurt Locker? It was GREAT! It just show you don't need a kajillion dollars to make a good movie. I don't think the amount of money a movie makes should have anything to do with whether it wins an academy award.

I haven't seen The Hurt Locker, I will watch it though when I get around to it. But I can see why Avatar didn't win as much as people expected. The awards are really to recognize the talent of the people who make the movie, and when it comes to Avatar, I do love it, it was entertaining and so moving, but there wasn't that much artistic talent that showed other than the special effects, which it did win an award for.

I certainly think James Cameron should have won best director. He pretty much invented the way they did their 3D, and the way he put the 2 worlds together was incredibly impressive. I kind of feel like what's-her-face won BECAUSE she's a woman.

Agreed. I saw it over the summer and thought it was great.

The Hurt Locker is on my On Demand so I will catch it soon. I want to see what all the excitement is about. I thought tho that Avatar would win. A little trivia here, that was James Cameron's X-wife who won for best director and then movie. Very attractive woman. He is married to the woman he met while making Titanic, she played the old lady's niece but she has aged like crazy. Couldn't believe how old she looks now, very wrinkled. Some people just age better than others but you would think Hollywood people would keep up
He was married to Linda Hamilton at that time.

"The Hurt Locker" is a good movie, and even though I enjoyed it a lot, there are some criticisms about the film from a tactical setting standpoint, which are justified from a "real world" point of view, but in the end it's just a movie. I want to be entertained, which I was. If I want the real world I have history books and documentaries to occupy my time.

I am in total agreement with the idea that just because a movie makes a gazillion dollars doesn't mean it's worthy of an Oscar.

It makes perfect sense to me. You've got all sorts of artists, members of the Academy, voting for these categories. With the advent of so much CGI, and technical trickery, most artists will vote for films and work that has real, human stuff going on, that they can see, in front of them, rather than a bunch of special effects "tricks" - amazing though they may be. Special effects awards, and technical awards - great - which is what it won.

Avatar may be stunning to look at, but it's basically a story that's been told lots of times before - it just had crazy, new special effects. James Cameron drives me crazy - him with the "we're telling a brand new story" stuff in interviews.
Puhlease.......get over yourself, Mr. King Of The World. This story has been told in so many different ways in other films.

Okay, end of rant.

As you can see, I'm not a big James Cameron fan. His former wife, Kathryn Bigelow, has been working as a director for years, and has certainly paid her dues. She's well respected among other directors, and I don't really think her award was given to her "just" because she's a woman. She worked hard for this, and The Hurt Locker, IMO, is a brilliant film, and its award is also well-deserved, I think.

And I love Sandra Bullock. She's so down to earth, and seems really sweet and has really worked hard as well.

I was really pleased with the winners in practically every category! And I thought the show was good!

Except for leaving Farrah Fawcett off the deceased montage...
That, to me, was really bad. She had a heck of a lot more film work on her resume than Michael Jackson did, and he got included.

I just watched some clips of the oscars. Didn't get to watch last night because I worked, but I LOVED Sandra Bullock's speech, touching but she threw funny in too. And her husband getting teary eyed when she cried while thanking her mother! So sweet. I'm glad she won. She was awesome in The Blind Side.

Her speech was wonderful, wasn't it? She's so real. I always feel like she'd be great to sit down and have coffee with.
