Cats can sleep and look like they're dead. I pray that this is what you're seeing, but it sounds like you touched him; if so, he should wake up, but slowly.

Yeah I can imagine. Its probably not a skunk if the smell has already gone away though. Im sorry this happened. The only way to really find out is to have a vet look at him. Just a a very sad tragedy. Very sad.

Oh my God... I am so sorry! I can't even imagine going through something like this! RIP Duke... You have other cats in the house, right?
Look around when you calm down to see if there is anything he could gotten into... Anti-freeze, bleach, cleaner, toxic plants... go down on the floor and see at his level if there is any danger around...
A sudden death like this makes me think of one thing: Heartworm... Did he ever cough?
I am so so sorry....

So sorry for your loss.

that it's not something that can affect the others.

You may want to post a memorial thread in the Rainbow Bridge area, if you haven't already. A lot of people have lost a pet before and can be there for you and really understand what you're going through.

Yes i have 14 other cats.. My bf did say maybe he drank anti freeze but then he said there isnt any around so that can be ruled out. I dont have any house plants and where i live we have been in a deep freeze and snow covered for the past 2 months.. It was and is very frightning still.. I keep going to the basement and checking... He did not ever have a cough but 2 years ago he had a runny eye and went blind in that eye... now that i think of it though i did notice he would snore really loud while he sleeping lately.. would that be a sign of heartworm? Today it got up into the 40s and all the cats were out enjoying the sun and walking on top of the hard snow- so i thought!!! when it got dark i saw some on the porch and opened the door and thats when i smelled the skunk and a bunch of cats came flying in and i heard a loud meow and saw Duke laying on the kitchen floor in distress.. gone within a minutes... Tomorrow at daybreak i will check around for the prints in the snow because up until today they were all just hanging around on the porch and under the porch and the sidewalk.. and i noticed around 5 or so that there were cat prints all over the snow..

I have read that it can be a sign of heart problems, congested heat failure, and it so it could certainly explain the sudden death...

ETA: Actually, correcting myself... It is more a wheezing sound, as oppose of snoring, that is a sign of heart problem and congested Heart failure - it can also be a symptom of Heartworm.

If it wasn't the antifreeze {which could be an easy exaplanation if true} it might've been a heart attack suffered in his sleep. I had this happen to a kitten once. She was perfectly healthy, then suffered an apparently very painful heart attack out of the blue and dropped dead. A vet might be able to determine the cause of death by autopsy, but it could be expensive, and...it wouldn't bring your baby back.

I'm so sorry you had to lose him so suddenly. I know what it's like. It's just a shock.

OMG.. I can say his snore was compared to wheezing.. I never thought nothing of it other than he was a loud snoring cat.. jeepers creepers..

Yeah... wheezing can definitely be a sign of heart problems and IS an symptom of Heartworm... It might be a good idea to talk to your vet about it, and check if you are in a heartworm area...

Thanks but i know he wasnt sleeping when it happened.. My bf also said (since we smelled skunk) that the skunk might have gave him a heart attack... idk??? he wasnt sprayed i know that much.. and he looked ok.. i even checked his claws.. their fine and there is no blood or wounds.. Im leaning towards what Carolina and you suggest though.. heart attack of some sort..

I have read that a cat with a heart problem can throw a clot and death is almost instaneous.

Or could he have been hit by a car? Sometimes, it does internal damage and leaves no outward signs. Checking their pupils is a clue to head trauma.

So sorry for your loss and pain. What a terrible shock for you. God bless your little one.
