hey guys,
as some of you guys already know i am getting a sphynx cat and i was wandering can anyone give me the basic care of them cause i cant find a good resource. thank
Sean

It depends on the sphynx.
Some need baths every week.
You have to clean their ears and nails.
They get very oily.
I use baby wipes to clean them in between baths and ear cleaner for the ears.
They also get eye gunk that has to be removed sometimes because they do not have eye lashes.

thanks! but my biggest question is how big do they get and how much do they weigh?
Everyone who I talk to asks that very same question. I always tell them to imagine a normal cat that is bald. That really is the only difference between them. They are the same size as a normal cat, getting around 9 lbs at adult age. My girls were only about 7.5 lbs, one of whom just had her first litter (of one) and she was just a little over 9 lbs at 6 weeks gestation. My boy is heavier in the 9 lb range, but he definitely is larger in the tummy, biggest suck in the house!!

Really? I thought they were a little smaller - never really handled them much - I figured about 7 lbs average. Gee learn something new every day

That's awesome Sean, and awesome that you came here too to learn everything about your kitten before you get him... That shows that you are going to make a very good pet parent!
I hate to ask you this, but I assume your parents are 100% behind you on this, right? both financially, and with everything else concerning the kitty? Remember, a cat can live up to 20+ years, so it is a commitment to life!
Also, You are a kid, busy with school, your friends and stuff... Don't take me wrong, but I have to ask you.... Who is going to take care of the kitty? Sphynx is a higher maintenance cat, in the sense that it needs a bath every couple of days, and having the eyes and ears cleaned, etc... Besides that, you need to do the regular cat ditties, feeding good food at least 2x a day (don't worry, we will be right here to help and teach you all about it ), and cleaning the litter boxes at least once a day, etc....
It sounds to me your heart is on the right place, and you do have the support of your parents, otherwise you wouldn't have the money to afford a Sphynx from a breeder.
Again, please do not taking this as a judgment... It is not it at all... I am actually very impressed with you, and can't wait to hear all about your new kitten... I do hope you get a kitten from mews2much breeder though - hurry to talk to him!! I just wanted to address a few things that have been on the back of my mind!
I hope you stick around for a long long time

I understand and think your concern is valid ... Just as an example ... I did all the basic care( feeding , grooming , exercising, cleaning up after, etc) , made vet appts , gave meds at younger than 13 and I had two to three species I cared for

Males IMHO are more affectionate than females ... so it depends if you want a needy kitty or a more independent one.. Plus when you go see the litter ( hopefully you can) let the right one pick you... I had my heart set on a female when I was a couple years younger than you and picked the wrong cat ... She of course lived nearly 19 years and we did have a great relationship after a rocky start( she picked my mom)

All the sphynx at the shows are smaller then normal size cats.
Even my small Oreo is bigger the my sphynxs.
Cleo is 7.10 pounds full grown.
The males tend to be between 8-9 pounds.
There are some that are bigger though.
I asked him about his mom being ok with him getting a sphynx on his first post on the newbies.
Don't worry too much about getting to meet the litter and letting the cat choose you. Especially if you are getting a breeder though recommendations, you can trust they are a good breeder.

I didn't meet most of my cats until picking them up at the airport, and they are all exactly what I wanted.

Mine are not Spyhnx but both males and females are lap cats, you can't sit down around here without having a cat on you. The personalities of mine are the same in both sexes.

The Spyhnx here are a titch smaller than your average moggie.

Cleo came right to me purring when we picked her up just like her breeder told me she would.
Wrinkles was a little timid.
Now she is very friendly and licks my face and purrs very loud.
She is a big hit with the public at the shows.
She loves to hug people and purr.
Cleo also loves people.

thanks! another question( sorry for all the questions but i want as much as i can) what does the breeder send with the cat like on the airplane along with the cat i know it come with a carrier but what kind and does it come with anything else? thanks oh and i almost forgot how long does it take to ship!
They come in hard sided carriers.
It depends on the breeder what they come with.
Cleo came with a snuggle sac and a ball.
Wrinkles came with a bed and a blanket.
They all come with food and water and some type of dish.
It depends on where the breeder lives and where you live on how long the flight is.

IMO, waste of $$$....... You will see, beds in general will be a waste of $$$, unless in the cold cold winter...
Cats like boxes, YOUR bed, the couch, the chair.....
I do not use heated beds.
I do not trust them at all and think they can cause a fire.
My sphynx love the snuggle sacs and blankets.
I also have normal beds.
They love boxes also and sleeping on the scratching posts.

I take my sphynx to petsmart on a harness and leash.
I hold them and have the harness just in case they try to get away.
They do not go outside and they get sun burned from just sitting on the window sill.

You need to get on a waiting list.
If you wait until the last minute the kittens might be sold.

Our Sphynx liked heated beds, but I did worry about the kitties chewing the cord and about it getting too hot. I finally decided it wasn't worth the worry. He also liked to sit on top of my computer tower, and any other warm place in the house.

My Egyptian Maus are fairly sensitive to colder temperatures. My studly male lives in my room which is in a basement, so the ambient temperature there is about 55 degrees during the winter. Granted, I have a heater in my room that keeps things at a much more cozy temperature, but I also keep a heated blanket on my bed. The good news is that he loves it and is sleeping on it as I type. The bad news is that he doesn't snuggle with me half as much as he used to His siblings are always trying to visit so that they can get their share of the blanket

My father has a littermate to my boy, and he noticed within the first week he had her that she really needed someplace warm and snuggly to sleep. So he picked up a heated bed for her, and she loves it.

You'll really have to take into consideration the climate where you live. Carolina and Mews both live in areas that are generally warmer. But if you're in New England, heated beds might be necessary for your naked kitty during the colder months.

Did you email a breeder yet?
I do not want you to make a mistake and get from a bad breeder.
I feed both kinds of food.
Cleo gets N/B Duck and Pea or Chicken and Pea because other foods make her sick.
She had Royal Canin kitten 36 until she was 1.
Wrinkles gets Precise Organic no grain food and Royal Canin kitten 36.
These foods are not cheap.
I would use what the breeder is feeding when you get the kitten.

I'm in a warmer climate and my cats love warm spots. I have Snuggle safe disks and electric pet heating pads.

I have a kitty enjoying her snugglesafe as the temp dipped down to 85 today and she has no one to cuddle with

Snuggle safe's are heating disks you microwave, and they stay warm for 12 hours.

But you will feed less of the better foods, so while the initial cost is more, over time it works out.
