This mat caught my eye because of its size and texture, which traps fine litter rather well. It's large enough for jumbo litterboxes, which is also a plus. It's not quite as easy to clean as a...

This scoop was a freebie with some clumping litter I bought last year, and I like it so much that I've bought a second one. It's perfect for fine clumping litter, which it sifts very thoroughly....

I personally do not like the covered boxes. The cats have no option as to where to enter the box. It traps odors also and is dark.
I think any good size should be fine. He should have enough room to turn around comfortably and deep enough to keep at least 3 inches of litter in. I keep my litter box at about 4 inches deep. But with 7 cats using it, I need it that deep. It has nice high sides. That is important when they are digging it keeps the litter inside much better.
A larger size pan will also make it easier on you regarding time spent cleaning. I have a jumbo size box and it more than accomodates my cats. I clean it probably 5 to 6 times a day just because I don't want any odor. But I could do it maybe only 3 times.
Look on the web at all the various ones available. Have fun with your new friend!

I guess they're ok (self cleaners). Pricey though. I prefer to scoop.

Sean, do yourself a favor and save a LOT of $$$... Don't get a litterbox... Get a storage bin instead - they make the best litterboxes, and are very cheap!
I love the Sterilite containers, but you can get the Rubbermaid too... The only thing is they are more expensive...
If you are getting a Kitten, Get a Under the bed Sterilite container; the one I have is 35Q, 33Liters. The under the bed ones have lower sides, so they are great for kittens.
I do use it for my 3 adult cats, with no problem - it is the best litterbox in the house, and the cheapest one too - it cost me around $5-6 at Big Lots. You can buy these containers at Target, Walmart... anywhere...
You can also buy the High sided ones, and cut a little door no the front for the kitten, but I like the lower side better.
I am telling you, IMO litter boxes are a waste of $$$. None of them are as good as a Sterilite storage container.... And the best part is, you get it for nearly nothing.

Otherwise, get this litter:
Kitten Attract Litter. I would use this for a couple of months, just while the kitten is getting used to your house... Then you transition to another litter. I like Dr. Elseys Precious Cat Litter, from the same manufacturer.
