I hope you read this through the end because that's where it gets good...

I had to run some errands today and found myself at the pet store. I didn't really need anything, but, being that this particular store tends to have excellent competitive pricing (and the fact that I had two $200.00 gift cards left over from my birthday
), I decided to run in to see what was up. And, trust me, I'm glad I decided to go in because they had an awesome sale going on. I was in heaven
!

The dogs got about 20 cans of their wet food along with a big bag of their dry food. They also got a package of their tartar control biscuits, a couple of boxes of treats, a bag of rawhide bones (American-made), and a pair of Nylabone chews. They got 2 new dog beds also. Oh, and they got new collars and tags as well! The hamsters got food (buy one bag, get one free), new hidey-houses, and chew sticks. And, the birds got a couple of new toys as well as some mineral blocks and spray millet.

And, the cats? Well, the cats made out like bandits (of course
)! I bought them a bunch of cans of ZiwiPeak food and a bag of the freeze-dried food as well (I'll post about this in another forum), some of their regular canned cat food, 2 bags of their dry food (TOTW), a number of different treats, a couple (couple = 5 in this case
) toys, and a HUGE box of litter. They also got a new cat fountain and a handful of the inserts/filters, another set of wet food dishes, a pair of cat beds, and new collars. See? I told you they were spoiled
!

Amazing was the fact that I still had money left over (almost $75.00) on one of the cards when I left. But, that's not even the best part! Apparently, since I use my own reusable bags, each time you use one instead of a plastic bag in the store, you get entered into a drawing. Well, let's just say that I put a lot of tickets into the contest bin! And, no sooner did I leave the store that I received a call from the manager saying that I had won! And, what did I win? A $250.00 gift card and a gift basket! The gift basket (as if the gift certificate wasn't enough!) had in it a fleece throw with pawprints on it, a stationary kit with kitties on it, a variety of dog-themed greeting cards, an inspirational daily reader having to do with animals and (get this!) a gas card worth $50.00, a gift card for a local grocery store worth $100.00, and two $100.00 gift cards for the pet store! I never win anything and, seriously, I feel like I hit a major, major jackpot! I couldn't even believe it!

I thanked the store manager profusely and then bought a bunch of stuff (using one of the $100.00 gift cards) for their shelter drive (dog food, cat food, a bunch of collars and leads, and a load of cat and dog toys). Then, on my way home, I stopped at the shelter I got Cassidy and Delaney from and donated the other $100.00 gift card to them. They were so appreciative and I felt so good about it. That still left me with the $250.00 gift certificate and a full heart. And, that came after I bought a bunch of food for the local food bank this morning! I can't believe I was blessed enough to win such a lovely prize and be able to feel good about myself for helping others.

This is just proof of how there is still goodness in the world. I quit my job and was struggling with that decision majorly. I wanted to help others because I may someday need that help (and, I am blessed enough to be able to help right now). I'm just beyond words at how lucky I am. Today was a good day and I just wanted to share that all with you -- there is always reason for hope and faith and in doing good for others you will be given good in return.

Wow...just wow...

That's so, I believe it with all my heart! How lovely for you to have such good fortune, and share it around as you did. What you give, will come back.

Thanks for sharing such an inspiring story. I'm so happy you had such a good day. I've been wondering how you are doing.

Thank you for sharing!

What a wonderful and lovely blessing for you and your babies! Everything happens for a reason and you truly deserved to receive that abundant blessing
How sweeeeet, kind and *generous*of you to donate the two $100 gift cards towards the shelter and shelter drive! Honestly, I'm not certain if I had been the one to win that prize if I would have shared it like you or held on to it for later.

You, my dear, are an inspiration!

God Bless!

The store is not a big name pet store. It's locally owned and operated. It has a mom-n-pop type feel to it, but they literally carry everything. If it wasn't so far away, I'd probably shop there exclusively (though I do love me some PetSmart). But, since it takes me at least an hour to get there, I can't go as often as I'd like. I usually wait until I have an appointment or errands to run in the area to stop in. And, then it's like I buy the place out
! I'm not one to typically like smaller pet shops as I've had bad experiences where their pet care is concerned, but this one is different -- so much so that I received numerous gift cards for them for Christmas and my birthday! They do a lot of work with the local shelters and they are generally just nice people. You don't see that so much anymore...

(I should also mention that the gift basket was donated by a small rescue group in the area. They do it to drum up excitement and energy and to help boost awareness and adoptions!)

I appreciate everyone's kind words. I don't feel like I did anything special, though. I was raised to give to others because you never know when you might need someone to give to you. And, I do support the local shelters and rescues. After all, they are who gave me my precious babies. And, in a way it is selfish. Giving back to the community is an esteemable act -- I feel good afterwards. But, regardless, I am thankful. Things have been difficult so far this year and today was a bright spot in all the darkness. It was nice to receive such a lovely gift...and to share it with others. Faith and hope is never something I want to run out of and today just gave me a mega-dose which should last me for a while to come

I am thrilled to hear that you have a "mom and pop" store like this in your area that can afford to do that type of promotion!! Especially in this economy. Good for them!!

And to win what you did simply for re-using bags, that makes me even happier. I have several canvas bags that I always use for shopping. I can remember not too many years ago when I would shop at Target and would bring with me the plastic bags from a previous Target trip (my Target has nice, strong plastic bags) and having the checkout people look at me like I was crazy for bringing them in to reuse them.
I love that now most of the grocery stores in my area encourage (and often give discounts for) using canvas/reusable bags.
