Ultrasound this afternoon - and a bad experience on a web board

Sky is having an ultrasound at 5pm today in Courtenay. It's a bit over an hour drive down the highway, but the vet office is supposed to be state of the art and a bit 'posh'. They were recommended to me by my friends who only raw feed their dogs and cats and are manic in their animal care... It doesn't surprise me that they avoid vets in our town.

My current vet is opposed to testing, either vaginally or through blood, to see if there could be some issue preventing pregnancy. So, I have been looking into alternate vets who will be open-minded enough to look at options other than spaying. Both vets in my town openly rolled their eyes at me when I suggested group G strep or ANYTHING that my breeding mentors say. They say that breeders are all nuts. I'm thinking that 10 to 30 years of cat breeding would provide a whole lot of experiential knowledge that may not be taught in an institution but can be valid just the same.

All I want is to find a vet who will work with me in finding some solutions.

On another note - I'm rather down right now as I had a bad experience on another board. My BF and I have been researching dog breeds for getting a puppy about 2 years from now. We have tentatively decided on a labrador retriever, so I posted our thoughts to a North American Lab forum.. just like this one for cats. Well, I was basically dragged over the coals.. they made assumptions about me and questioned my motives.. one even suggesting that my BF and i shouldn't even be thinking about getting a dog because we MAY break-up.

It's disheartening and while I understand that people get protective of their breeds, whether cat or dog, pouncing with such a high degree of self-righteousness is hard to take. They actually made me cry, lol. I had posted that I love my GSD, but I'd rather look at a "mellower" dog for the future (as our next dog) as my GSD has aggression issues with other dogs. So I get jumped on as a bad dog owner because my dog doesn't like other dogs and it's all my fault. Sigh.. trying to shake it off.

We have a Labrador - if you want a better board I'll email the link. They are a lot more friendly. I can tell you the pros and cons of labs and what to look for.

The biggest drawback in labs is the SHEDDING - I'm serious. They are the worse shedding dogs (tie between GSD and Labs). Our next dog after Keno is gone will be a non-shedding parti-color poodle from a reputable breeder (I'm on a poodle board/group and have researched a few of the breeders on there.

As much as I'd like to adopt a parti - the ones I looked on Petfinder are from puppy mills and I refuse to adopt or buy any dog from a mill - even ones they rescued.

Please try not to take this as judgmental, but I don't understand why you would want to breed a cat who has already proven to not be able to get pregnant? Obviously there is something not right with her, why would you want to take the chance of passing that on? Why would you want to take a chance on something happening to her during a pregnancy or delivery?

I'm asking, because I really want to know. I don't understand it?

SKY HAS KITTENS!!!!!!!

We saw three all on one screen and 2 on another pass - so she either has three or maybe 5 - or whatever... but they are sure there are three because we saw them all at once.

Congratulations! Do you know when they're due since you didn't know she was pregnant?

How did all the other vets miss this?

Oh it's a loooong story. All here if you want to look it up.

It was a planned breeding and they will be due April 2nd.

The ultrasound showed 3 on one screen and two on a different pass. There could be three total or a few more.. but three for sure.

Congratulations !!!!! We just got our visual confirmation of our other Sphynx being pregnant...her boobies have turned pink and have popped out! She'll be 3 weeks in tomorrow. I am thrilled about it. Monty got her like 6 times right here in the office, so it's not like I didn't witness the breeding.

And some other breeders have told me not to expect any heats until Spring. Geez, I guess my house feels nice n warm and sunny to them.

Congratulations!! I'm really happy for you I found that queens are fairly consistent in the number of kittens they produce, but I'm sure you'd even be dancing for a singleton

Skylark was not proven to be unable to become pregnant; Sohni was going through the process of determining the source of the problem. Skylark comes from a long line of healthy and attentive mothers, so it would have been imprudent to remove such a cat from a breeding program before ruling out environmental factors as the source of the problems with conception.

Sohni and her vet carefully followed a protocol for treating for a microbe frequently associated with conception and birthing difficulties. Now Skylark is pregnant. So she's perfectly fine to reproduce

As for issues during delivery. . . that's a risk we breeders have to accept with every pregnancy. We do all we can to anticipate and prevent any possible problems, but if we can't. . . well, that's what the emergency vet is for!
