update on bad situation

The cat with the wound on his side is now worse! THe wound is much deeper now. He still seems ok but i have put hte call out to animal control and 2 animal agencies that i need help with trapping him. I called vets in the area and there are a few who will see him tomorrow IF i can trap him

If I CANT get him trapped tonight... i really fear he could end up dead by another attack...

I asked a few times before about spraying the wound... now I want to know could I spray him with something that will keep whatever animal is attacking him away from him??? This may be an out there question... but vinegar is used as a deterrent - if he smells bad will other cats leave him alone??

I know he needs a vet - and the weekend is coming up now. I feel guilty, sick and just terrible that i didnt get him yesterday - but now I desperately need to do something to keep him safe until i can get him to the vet.

THe only crate i have is a small one and will ask a neighbor to help me tonight if none of the animal agencies can help. But how long can they be kept in a small cat carrier - with having to urinate, etc.

I think you need to call the vet and Animal control and ask them of they have a humane trap you can borrow. You need to trap him and take him to the vet... Don't worry about him being locked up - worry about him being loose and getting attacked...
Now, if he is very friendly, and close enough for you to see the details on the gash... Are you sure you can't get him?
Or you can, but you don't have a place to keep him until tomorrow?
Do you have a bathroom, garage? You gotta keep him in - he will get attacked again. Whatever is attacking him will take advantage of the fact that he is hurt to attack some more... That is actually one of the reasons why cats are so good in hiding pain and diseases; in this case however, he obviously can't hide.
Please keep him inside.

Does he let you touch him when he's eating? Some of mine do. I've had to betray their trust and grab then and stick them in the cat carrier before. If you can't do that, then you need to get a live trap. I bought mine at Atwoods for a little over $20.

I have a have a heart trap and my vet will refer people to me when they need to trap a cat.

Call some of the local vets or rescue groups. Someone must have a trap they will be willing to loan. You can even offer to put a deposit down, although I don't ask for anything.

I hope you can secure him even if it is in a shed till the vet can see him.

i just bought a bigger crate and hopefully my neighbor will help. My plan is to grab him hand him to neighbor who can hopefully get him into the crate. Im just too "girly" about it... but i know how serious this is and know this HAS to be done tonight. I wouldnt be able to sleep knowing he could be worse/dead tomorrow.

Thanks for the info about cats and how they attack- didnt know that - but assumed things wouldnt get better for him.

Ive spent ALL day calling vets, sending emails etc. Animal control told me I needed to trap him and he would try to get an organization to help pay the cost. He was supposed to call me back.... He said my county only pays for spay/neuter but 2 women from different animal organizations told me its HIS responsibility to trap and take them to a vet. I just contacted my local shelter who said the same thing... I guess there may be an issue with ferals and their caretakers. Meaning if a cat gets sick and I feed him - his health care is my responsibility??? But the women from these organizations deal with ferals ALL the time - so i dont get why A.C. isnt helping me out - he knows me by name - we are very friendly

Im HOPING, PRAYING that something can be worked out where the ACO can get hte cat, take him to the vet and then take him to the shelter (which is protocol for non-cared for ferals) and I can pick him up. I was told they will not euthanize him based on him being a feral - i always heard otherwise.

So this all now confuses things even more - I was going to try to get him to a vet tomorrow- however thats the only day I work. Not to mention I cant afford it - not knowing what all this entails - it could be a fortune.....
This is why i desperately needed all this to happen today! But no one seems to give a crap and im left frustrated and stressed...

PLUS who knows if this cat can even BE saved.... this is too much for me (ive been crying all day)

Animal control in my town doesn't do anything unless there's an aggressive animal or a bite.

I had one that was trap wise. I had to eventually just tame him and stuff him in a carrier.

A bit of warning, though. Kitty trusts you, not your neighbor. If you attempt to hand off a cat to someone it doesn't know while it's already upset, someone will very likely get bitten! Best bet is for you to set a cat carrier up on end near where you feed them. Call him over, lure him with canned or human food. Pet him some and if/when you can scuff him put him right in the carrier yourself.

He'll be ok in it for a few hours.

Scruff him - never thought of that. Now he will still fight me though right - i mean that position wont make it easier to get him in the door will it? Do i need to hold his legs???

I just need to know all i can before i attempt this - if i screw it up - it will be more difficult.

Im going to FIRST try to just let him go in his own - i bought mackerel today. That way its not that big of a deal if he doesnt go it - but once i get "violent" on him.. i know everything will change.

Also.. i was thinking i have a huge dog crate. I have to see how big the door is - because if its big enough - then i should have no problems... It will be incredibly heavy - but if it means he will be safe tonight I will definitely use it.

they do prefer smaller areas? correct?

If you scruff him and get him in the cage quickly enough, he'd probably be to shocked too fight. That's how it worked for me.

We have long leather gloves for situations like this. Maybe just wear something thick and protective just in case.

The dog crate is perfect for him to spend the night! You can fit a small litter box in there, food and water... Try also to put a cat bed, or a little blanket for him to sleep in it
Good luck trapping him!

I got him!

Hes in a very large dog crate - having a fit. Its seriously breaking my heart. Hes not jumpy - just crying and then his friend came over and he cried.

I put a thick pillow case, a water dish with wet food and papers.

I couldnt get hte door locked though - but thank GOD there was a lamp post that I was able to pull it to and lean the door against it

my neighbor is supposed to call me and help me carry it to his porch. as far as a vet - ill worry about htat tomorrow - but for now he is safe.... and very very unhappy

Thank goodness you got him....I don't know much about feral's..but I wanted to say what a wonderful person u are for helping this poor cat...
Great job!! You're the best chance this kitty has for survival. Thanks for taking care of him.
SOOOO wonderful that you got him. How the heck did you do it? Did he fight much?

Are you able, once your neighbor can help you, to put some kind of a small litterbox in the cage for him? As cats are pretty clean creatures, he might not "go" otherwise. Of course you don't want to risk him escaping when you open the carrier door.

Poor kitty. Thank GOD you got him, you're an angel. DO keep us posted.

THANKS guys!!

Well.. what i needed all along was a trap/crate with a big door - to just "throw" him in. And my large dog crate was perfect and very simple. I tried a few times to pick him up - and he would run off a little farther each time and then I took a deep breath - grabbed him - ran a little and "threw" him in. He didnt squirm that much - probably because we were going so fast.

My neighbor and I just put him on his porch - his reaction to his wounds almost got me crying again. Just shocked!!

THEN i came back to my computer and saw someone FINALLY was willing to help. Not only will this organization pay for it - since its an emergency case- hes going to find someone maybe to transport hte cat for me!!!! Im so thrilled - i just hope this can happen tomorrow because of hte bad timing of the weekend... but this is great news!

Of course my next fear... my BIGGEST fear is that the cat is unable to be saved.... i know its likely he may be put down after ALL of this and... but cant think about it...

Excellent!!!! Good Job!
So who is this organization? Are they going to keep you informed? And after they treat the kitty, what happens to him?
Also, kitty has a litter box, food and water for tonight, right?

Thank you sooooo much for taking care of him... You are an angel!

hes covered on an outdoor patio right now - but how crazy is this - they dont really like that and are coming to get him NOW - and take him to a warm garage !! And will take him to the vet..

This day has been a complete 180. I dont belive it!!! I do know that prayer works!!

I dont know what will happen - i hope to have him back -but to be honest, if they can adopt him - i would definitely be ok with that.... so again its hoping a vet can save him FIRST and thats all i REALLY care about.

This is a blessed cat. Please keep us posted how what happens to him. What a great person to are to care and try to save him.
Yay! You got him!
Good to hear you caught him.. I know in my area if the injury is treatable- the cat if feral would be released back to its surroundings neutered.. If its somewhat tame it has a chance to be adopted at the shelter.. Only once did i get a call they were going put one down and now she lives with me and her name is girlfriend
post #21 of 31
So glad to hear this! Your are a complete angel to the cats of the world.

WOW you guys have me crying again - thats all i did yesterday.

This one woman is wondering if its a skin condition of somesort - maybe a cyst that he bit open.... anyway he'll be going to the vet on monday cause even though she thought it was really bad she thinks he will be ok.... (from what shes seen in her experience). Plus another "angel" from this organization called all hte vets in the area with no luck of finding an appointment today anyway.

She also said he will be leukemia tested and then its up to me if I want to save him or not - but she thinks its best to put him down if he were positive.

I know not to get too excited at this point cause then ill be devastated if its bad news...

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH for your support - you have NO clue how much I REALLY need it!!!!
I'll keep my fingers crossed the test is negative for leukemia ....
WAY TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You are an ANGEL and prayers and vibes do work! How wonderful of the organization to help you and this kitty!

for him..... and please keep us posted!

GOOD JOB!!!!!!!

You did a wonderful thing for this poor little guy, please keep us updated on how his vet visit goes. I wish there were more people like you in the world.
If he is positive chances are everyone else is too. I wouldn't put him down because he is leukemia positive. Did she say why she thinks it's best to put him down if he's positive?

Attitude and Nuts my inside kitties are both leukemia positive and so are at least 5 out of the 6 outside cats, Mama, Biter, Runt, Goldie Jr and Half-tail(they are all related Mama is Biter's mom and the others grandma and Biter is mom to Runt, Half-tail and Goldie Jr, plus Attitude and Nuts) not sure if Blue is positive or not since he just showed up one day and decided to stay. Personally I wouldn't put him down just because of leukemia.

Ignore the statistics and go with your heart. I wouldn't put him down because of leukemia if they can fix his neck wound. Like I said chances are everyone is positive and I doubt you want everyone put down.

I'm biased about this just because of how many humane societies and rescues kill cats simply because they have leukemia.

I'd just really like to know what her(rescue person) reasoning as to why it would be best to put him down if he's positive. I know a lot of vets and others think it's best to kill them but they can live happy lives for whatever time they have left.

If he is suffering and he can't be saved due to his neck wound then I would put him to sleep but not just because he has leukemia.

for a negative leukemia test. Lord knows I would have loved to hear that with Attitude and Nuts.

Mama and Biter both(well 3 of them but Goldie disappeared one day and was never seen again and Callie, the other female found a new home) were fixed after the first kitten boom over the summer, 4 mother cats, and one neighborhood tom made 15 kittens) have been here for over a year and the kittens were born in June and everyone is happy and healthy. The only issue I've had was Mama had a rectal prolapse(totally unrelated to leukemia) that had to be fixed, but that is it. Give him a chance.

Thanks Taryn (good luck w/ your cats) Actually I wanted to send a message on Saturday and didnt have a chance.

He was actually taken to the vet on saturday and he's fine!!!!

Im waiting to see what the reason for hte wound is. The woman who picked him up from me didnt take him to the vet so shes calling the dr. today to find out the info.

I DONT think he did have the leukemia test... I guess this woman didnt think to ask for it... but I will keep that info in mind if any of these cats ever need the test.

I asked her about possibly adopting him but they are at full capacity. Once we know if this was a bite wound - we'll see what options we have. I REALLY want him back - but not if he's being attacked. To me it makes sense to take him back and then see if it happens again and THEN let them take him (if possible). She said he could be attacked again and not survive ONE attack.... so i just dont know what to do...

thanks again to ALL!!!!
