Why does she lick things?

Blue likes to lick stuff. Well, to be exact, lotion bottles, shampoo bottles, cleaner bottles... Anything like that. She used to lick glasses that had juice in them so I assumed she likes sweet stuff. She gave that up, thank goodness, because she broke MANY glasses that way. But, now I catch her in the bathroom, on the counter, licking the pump on my lotion bottle, or climbing into the cupboard under the kitchen sink looking to lick things under there! I am going to put child locks on the cupboards under the sink to keep her out of it. She also licks me A LOT if I just put lotion on.

Why do you think she does this? I think it has something to do with her vomiting, like if she has a tummyache she will lick something to make her throw up? She used to throw up every day like clock work, but now it is about 1-2 times a week or less. She sometimes goes 2-3 weeks without vomiting and then will throw up maybe 2 times in one week. She has been to the vet about it. They said that she was allergic to plastic, or she was eating too much and it was swelling in her tummy, or she has IBD, or any of many other ideas the many vets had. Since we switched her to a grain free, all canned diet the vomiting has gone WAY down. She is a Siamese cat, and I read that this is common in their breed.

What do you think?

I don't know why Blue does it, but I have a lick-er too. Jennie licks the underside of the table from her bed, and the kitchen cupboard doors, and a triangle of fur over her spay incision, and my arm.

I discourage her when I catch her at it, (licking things but if she was as bad as Blue, I would definitely be doing like you, locking up cupboards and putting all bottles away.

Sometimes eliminating the targets is all we can do.

My girl, Helen, is also a licker. She licks everything obsessively, but mostly blankets, the furniture, herself, the other cats, and me. I had to hold her still once and the only way to keep her still for about 10 minutes was to let her lick my arm...she literally licked the top layer of my skin off and I had a 6" long scab down my forearm for 2 weeks! When she's at the vet, if I let her lick me, she will take an injection or poking and prodding from the doctor with ease. During a nail trim, I have to position my arm so that she can lick me while I'm trimming her nails or else I have to fight with her to get them cut.

Helen is a hairless cat, but just yesterday she threw up a hairball. Yes, a hairball! It was blue and orange fuzz from her favorite blankie that she licks for hours and hours at a time. *shakes head*

I wish I knew how to make her stop, but she obviously gets some comfort from her obsessive/compulsive licking. I do worry about her ingesting so much blanket fuzz, though...

Blue also licks my arm a lot too. She will stand there and lick my husband's hand and then rub her face on it over and over while he scratches her "bum" (the area behind her tail on her back). He says she just uses him to wash her face for her. She is very silly.

I will lock the cupboards and put the bottles away. I just thought that maybe there was a reason for it.

Thanks for the replies.

Da Magpie licks too - glassware, plastic, computer screen (BLECH) and mostly me, any area of bare skin near her gets thoroughly wasned. Da Lip confines his licking to me, doesn't lick any dishes except the food bowls. Any of the barn cats I can pet also lick my hands - it's like it is a hobby with them. Now, Da Magpie and Da Lip are easy to sort out why - both weaned too early; Magpie lost her momma at 4 weeks, and Louie was found in town, with a giant scab where his bottom lip should have been and teeth just barely through and I suspect the licking (and sometimes gentle finger chewing) is residual behaviour from not nursing long enough, The rest?? Not a clue unless it is a plot to cover me in cat spit to counteract the horse slobber

There are scent glands in their mouths and that may be why they do it. Hannah's the lick-er in our house and it's crazy sometimes!

Holland is not a licker AT ALL, but I caught her licking a lint roller yesterday! It had been sitting out for MONTHS without so much as a glance from her, but I put it away after I caught her. Makes me wonder if she's a closet licker and licks things when I'm not around?

Neko LOVES to lick me!! She'll lick my arms and hands. And when I'm sleeping, she'll lick my face! I'm constantly waking up, tossing and turning. Those little licks hurt
