Background - Holland had all her teeth extracted about a month ago. Before that, she was fed strictly dry food and never cleaned her plate. I fed her about half a cup per day, based off of the chart on the package.

When she had surgery she weighed 6 pounds even. Her doctor said he would like to see her gain about a pound, and when she went in for a follow-up 3 weeks after her surgery, she had gained a whole 8 ounces!

Well, I've still got her on a wet food diet, per the vet's instructions, but she should be able to handle dry food soon. I've been giving her 3 x 3 oz. cans of wet food a day, the instructions say to feed 1 oz per day per pound of weight. And believe me, she would eat MORE than 3 cans if I let her. For a kitty who has always been quiet and has often gone for DAYS without making a peep, she gets very vocal when she is hungry now.

I know her appetite is better simply for the fact that she feels so much better, but I am wondering if I need to start weaning her off having so much food? If she continues to eat 9 oz a day will she get fat? I'm toying with the idea of feeding her 1 can in the morning and 1 can in the evening and then letting her have some dry food during the day. Is that reasonable?

TIA!!

What is her IDEAL wt?.. say it is 7 lbs then she would eat roughly 1/4 to 1/3 cup of dry food ... or 3.5 to 7 oz of wet or 3 oz of wet and 1/8-1/4 cup dry

Thank you sharky. She is a small girl. On her first vet visit after I adopted her, the doctor told me that she would likely never be more than 8 pounds. Right now she has got to be pretty close to 7, and she looks healthy and a good weight to me. I will take her in soon and get her weighed.

How do you know what the ideal weight should be? She is small, but if her ideal weight is 9 pounds, then I can continue to feed her as I have been.

your Vet is a good judge of ideal weight... Yes if she should be about 9 lbs then feed her as you have been

Since we are on the discussion of feeding wet and dry... I had a little question that doesn't require its own thread. Hopefully the OP will find this helpful as well:

For digestion purposes, Should dry and wet be served seperately by a certain amount of time? Is one type better for the morning vs. the evening?
Neko gets dry in the morning between 8-10am, depending on my schedule, and wet around 4pm and then again at 10pm.
