cat got into the back of recliner - almost hurt her!!!

our cat loves to get into the back of my recliner, i did not know that she was in there, i closed up the recliner and heard her.
it scared me to death - i did not hurt her, my wife took the back of the recliner off and she jumped out.
i have heard that some cats have been killed this way.
now she will not go even close to the recliner, so maybe she has learned the hard way.
i had closed up the back but she got in some how. i always look underneath the chair to make sure she is not under the chair before i close it up, but she was in the back of the chair between the back and the lining.
it just hurt her front paw a little but now she is fine but she is scared of the chair now, maybe that is a good thing.
anyone else heard of this happening????

Many years ago I almost shut a sofabed up with a cat inside the back of it. It was difficult to push shut and I thought it was because of the bedding I had left on it. Then I heard meowing. Fortunately I had not got to the point of forcing it shut. Ever since then I look under and inside folding beds and sofas whenever there is any possibility of a cat in the vicinity. We all know cats will get into anything they can.

When I was young (like Jr. High) my mom's boyfriend had a cat that had kittens. They also had a recliner. I remember finding a kitten body under the chair. Its a sight that has been etched in my brain forever.

If I dont see both kitties visually, myself, I refuse to put the recliner down, I'll crawl out of it sideways and go find both cats first.

Please be careful around the furbabes, its a wonderful cave, but also VERY dangerous!

Never actually shut a cat into a recliner, but there were some close calls. (parents had recliners and cats)

I won't allow recliners in my house at all due to the risk.. .and because people always break them.

Back when we had a recliner we had several close calls with the cats. No serious injuries, but a lot of howling and screeching did occur. After that when someone wanted to close the recliner, before they got up to shut it we did a head count of our 2 kitties just to make sure we didn't have a repeat incident. We since got rid of the recliner and I couldn't have been happier.

We do have recliners but always make sure to check for kitties before closing them. I am so thankful that your baby wasn't badly hurt. It's something I certainly worry about.

We have one and I always worry that someone's under the chair when I put it down. If my sister's there (or vise versa), the one not sitting in the chair will be instructed to look towards the chair and tell the one sitting if somebody's under the chair. So far, we haven't even had any close calls (well, maybe once I told my sister to stop when she was in the process of putting the footrest down, because somebody was under the chair).

Same here. We had some very close calls when I was a kid with the recliners and cats in them.

I also refuse to buy a recliner chair or sofa. When we bought the sofa we have now, we tried out the recliner sofas and found our regular sofa is so much more comfy. Plus I don't have to worry about the cats with it. We have a really great IKEA chair and ottoman that prop you like you are sitting in a recliner instead.

Anyone who has recliners and house cats needs to be sure where the cats are before the slam a recliner shut.

Nuts got his head caught in the reclining sofa(when he was little). He had his entire head through it and had the metal around his neck. I managed to get him out but I no longer close the footrest. Paul has a recliner and I tell him if anyone walks under the chair and let him know when they walk out even if he isn't going to leave the chair.

I don't have recliners, but years ago I had two foster cats that needed to go to a vet appointment. I couldn't find them anywhere and was panicking. I finally figured out that they had crawled through a little space in our couch between the arm and the springs, and were hiding under the springs inside the lining. DH and I had to flip the couch over and cut the lining off the underside of the couch to get them out. (And of course the vet had gone to lunch by the time we got to the office!)

Kitties seem to always find the craziest hiding spots. Recliners are dangerous places! I'm glad your cat didn't get seriously hurt.

YES cats have been killed by reclining chairs! I don't have any in my home at all. Or even rocking chairs. I'm just paranoid that way.

Years ago I had a sofa diver! She found EVERY place to squeeze into more than one piece of furniture but loved the big couch the best, she actually found a way to go INTO the couch. The first time it happened I couldn't find her anywhere and was looking outside because I was sure she'd left the house!

same fears here... I don't close the recliner until I can physically see my cat. If i don't, i jump out Cirque Du Soleil-style without closing, look under it, make sure nothing is there, and then close.

since the close call, our kitty will not go near the recliner, good thing because now every time i close it up, i look to make sure she is no where near the recliner.
but it seems she has learned her lesson, she will not even walk by the recliner now, she goes around it and avoids it at all costs.
i am just glad she learned because a friend of ours said one of her friends killed their cat in the recliner.

i look out for our baby now
