All this talk of kitten food has me questioning

what about ragdolls? since they mature more slowly should they continue on kitten feed longer>?

My kitten is now 1yo(feb 18) but he is on adult, a transition over the last month or so. Maybe i should continue with kitten though? he is BIG.. already 15lbs, not overweight just your typical big ragdoll male

I have 2 Ragdolls also, and since they are only fully grown at 4 years old, I hear it is best to feed them Kitten food until 18 months, or an all stage grain free...

Thanks! hmm... guess 'baby' will go back on his kitten 36


unfortunately, grain frees have never worked here... maybe one day

While I usually say no more then 4-5 months for small/medium size cats, if your kitten is a Ragdoll or Maine Coon, then feed kitten food up to 9 or 10 months, but just watch the weight - you don't want them to gain too fast or too slow. MC's and Ragdolls do take up to 4 yrs to develop, but you can feed adult food after 10 months.

I got to talk to a ragdoll breeder and she stated roughly 18-24 months is what she did ... of course opinions differ

I've had experience with purebreds and non purebreds, and I've learnt that, in my experience anyway, which foods are ideal depends more on the individual cat than its breed. If you're concerned about weight gain you feed a higher protein meal in slightly lower quantities. Kitten formulas tend to have higher protein. One of my cats has had issues with crystals, and ever since I switched her to purina urinary health, I've never had an issue since. Before that she was getting constant bladder infections.

That is the advice I got too... Because they are so big and develop so slowly, they require kitten food until much later... I was told at least 18 months. The alternative was a good quality high protein grain free all stage.

Kitten formulas differ from "adult" formulas almost solely by protein content. So, feeding either kitten formulas or a high protein other food would be almost the same thing.

I'd go with grain free or very low grain for ALL life stages.

Protein, Fat, carb level( ie higher protein and fat = less carbs)... Elemental bone minerals and vitamins ... Plus overall calories... Many differences from adult... All life stage with grains usually are = to adult not to kitten ... no grains normally exceed typical kitten in protein and fat and are okay in the minerals and vitamins for a typical kitten

Thank you, i will just resume back to the kitten formula..

No concerns with his weight, he was just into the vet to final up his needles for his neutering next week, she was pleased with how he has grown/developed when i got him he was this tiny, little 3lb bundle
