I posted about a week ago regarding Izzy - he has a brown/rust colored pigmentation in his iris. Anyway, his an ophthalmologist appointment is tomorrow and he is horrible whenever we bring him to a vet- very very afraid. Our primary vet. had given us a tranquilizer called "Acepromazine" and instructed us to give him half a pill 2 hours prior to his appointment.

My questions are is this safe, what can I expect and will this impact his eye examination? Also, are there any warning signs or symptoms that may indicate a negative reaction?

My apologies for the last minute post.
Regards,
Paul

Acepromazine is a sedative. It works by lowering the pet's blood pressure. It can frequently cause the eyes to droop and the nictitating membranes (third eyelid) to show. It shouldn't cause an issue with examining the iris, however I would recommend calling the opthalmologist to see if this will cause a problem.

Hope your visit goes well!

I would most definitely NOT recommend you give Izzy this sedative before going to the vet. I especially don't like Ace for cats, but any sedative is not likely to be helpful in my opinion, especially as you don't know how he will react.

In my experience giving a easily stressed cat a sedative just increases his stress. He feels funny, which makes him feel vulnerable, which adds more stress.

The advice to call the ophthalmologist in the morning before using the med is good advice.

Please let us know what you find out. I remember your thread about this before.
