Werid In-heat Behavior

My cat, Shinigami, is an unnutered female. She's a black american shorthair and is a very slim cat. she's three years old, and about five pounds
My mate's cat, Leo, is a nutered male. he's been nutered since he was two or three months i think. He's four years old and is a gray tabby mix (we think he's got some abyssinian thrown in there somewhere. he was an oops kitten!). He's about 11.5 pounds.

Now shini goes into heat at random. sometimes she's not in heat for months, then she'll go into heat for like...two weeks!
anyway, when she's not in heat, she cant stand Leo, and Leo's terrified of her. We've managed to work though their fighting issues, so their okay now but when shini goes into heat, she's all over him and he turns around and attacks her! He'll jump on her and bite the back of her neck. I know that this is regular mating behavior, but then he'll like...move around infront of her and will smack her in the head and snap at her ears. it looks like he's trying to bite her ears but he's still a good six inches away from them.

Can anyone tell me WHY he does this?

hello and welcome to tcs!

It's possible he doesn't like the way she smells when she is in heat

Poor kitty, she should be spayed by now, at 3 years old. It's very hard on a female cat, these endless heats. And she is at risk, greater as she gets older, for uterine cancer and a deadly painful uterine infection called pyometra.

It's very likely that once you have her spayed your cats will get along a little better.

For a more peaceful home, your Shimi should be spayed.
