There was an 8.8 earthquake in Chile, and there's a tsunami warning for Hawaii.
An article I read said the earliest a tsunami wave might arrive there would be 11:19 AM.

it's all Mama Nature shaking things up. I think we've been long overdue for some major tectonic plate shifting... (I grew up with this, and my big brother is a geologist). The plates under the Pacific are being over taken (well, really pulled under) by the continental plates (like South America, etc.). That is called Subduction.

Japan is slightly different most likely... I started to say one thing, but found some rather logical info on Wikipedia

<<The islands of Japan are primarily the result of several large oceanic movements occurring over hundreds of millions of years from the mid-Silurian to the Pleistocene as a result of the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate beneath the continental Amurian Plate and Okinawa Plate to the south, and subduction of the Pacific Plate under the Okhotsk Plate to the north.

Japan was originally attached to eastern coast of the Eurasian continent. The subducting plates, being deeper than the Eurasian plate, pulled Japan eastward, opening the Sea of Japan around 15 million years ago.[1] The Strait of Tartary and the Korea Strait opened much later.

Japan is situated in a volcanic zone on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Frequent low intensity earth tremors and occasional volcanic activity are felt throughout the islands. Destructive earthquakes, often resulting in tsunamis, occur several times a century. The most recent major quakes include the 2004 Chūetsu earthquake and the Great Hanshin Earthquake of 1995. Hot springs are numerous and have been developed as resorts.

A lot of this is stuff I remember from childhood, or from a quick summer course last year on the Geology of The Pacific NW... where we focused on where I live now... not so much general geology. But it's all similar. Continental plates are pushing Oceanic plates under.... when a major shift takes place, it causes some doozies (not a technical term) of quakes. These are different from quakes found inland... these are caused by cracks deep underground, and they're moving... some slide, so push against each other... that's how those pretty mountains and valleys we have are/were formed...

Okay... enough Geology talk... I'm gonna go wake up now... having grown up in Quake Country (SF/Bay Area), I'm used to them... I was in the '89 quake. Among many others. I'm waiting for us to get one up here to see how folks up here react... I've come across several people who don't think we would get quakes in Portland... umm... yeah, keep dreaming.

Must go off in search of coffee now...

Yeah, we have a 'tsunami watch' too in Long Beach.. However, we have our stupid breakwater so we have no real waves anyway, so if anything, we might get an actual normal size wave? We keep looking out the window to see if we see anything. We also have CNN on, keeping track of Hawaii. Water is a scary force!

If you go to ABC news site, you can watch a live feed from Hawaii. The first of the tsunami waves are affecting them.
