Indoor cats? They'll be better off than you will be in the house. But if you end up leaving because of no power, take them with you - you don't know when you'll be back.

As long as they are in the house they should be fine. We turn all heat off overnight here. It got to be 55 in their room many times this winter. They are fine. Curled up together, eating. It doesn't seem to bother them at all.

But I agree, if you do leave, take them with you.

Just remember, there are barn cats all over the place who do ok as long as they can get out of the wind. I've had many.

Do your cats have their winter coats or have you kept them warm all year? If they don't have their winter coats then if it gets too cold you could always turn the car on and turn on the heat and put them in there. I've had to do that once when my heat went out for too long.

BTW, for the future, if you know how to sew Joann sells a special insulating batting. If you wanted, you could make the cats some round beds or even just some mats to sleep in/on and that will help to keep them warm during the winter. You could even add some little pockets as handwarmer inserts for extra warmth.

My outside ones(6- 3 girls 3 boys) have been outside in 6 inches of snow and subzero temps and wind chills and been just fine. Mama's butt has been absolutely bare since before Christmas and she is finally getting fuzz back there and she has made it through the snows and coldest times if winter when no hair on her rear end and half her tail. She had a rectal prolapse so she had to be shaved, this wasn't intentional on my part. She also decided after a week inside she would much rather be outside so we weren't about to argue with her. I don't even know where she sleeps at night, 4 of them share a small doghouse(well cat house) at night and I'm not sure about the other 2 but I see them nightly as well so they either stay here or somewhere near by.

Unless you leave they will be fine with you.

Your cats will be better off than you without heat. Put them all under the bedcovers and crawl in with them to stay warm.

My furnace went out on Christmas eve and my house got down to 52 degrees. Everyone was fine. I would rather have my cats be a little cold in their own house than take them to a different place and risk stressing them out. If you think about it, 52 is nowhere near freezing and most anyone can be fine in that temperature. Of course it's much colder now. But I had 2 small space heaters running with my bedroom door shut and it got so hot I had to get up and turn one off in the middle of the night. I'd just put them all in one room and shut the door.

Cats would be okay at 52. I think it would be too cold for people. Don't risk your own health for the sake of your cats either. If it gets too cold, take the cats and go. It might stress them, but in weather like that, you can't be sure you could get back to your house and feed them when it is time. I hope you are okay. I am sorry for all you folks who are snowed in and no heat and lights. That is why I love NC. We don't get much snow here where I live.

I just wanted to update everyone. We are home, and FINALLY got heat and power late this afternoon. We were lucky enough to be able to get a generator hooked up late Sunday night for heat and water, so we came home then. Kitties did GREAT at the neighbors house, noone seemed stressed at all
Thanks everyone for all your advice and support!!!!

Good to know everyone is home safe and sound. I went through that back in 2001-2002, except my area, state actually, was declared a natural disaster and had to get government funding to help fix and clean up everything. My town had no power for nearly two weeks and when they did get it back on it would often go back off for hours at a time. Imagine trying to keep reptiles alive in that!

Stay safe.

Glad to hear that your kitties did well in someone else's home. Mine...HATE being anywhere that isn't home and as a result I don't take any vacations if I can't get an in-home kitty sitter!!

Cold never bothers them though, as long as they are out of the wind--that's what you want to make sure of in cold weather, and inside a house that's not an issue. To help ensure warmth if you're really worried you set up a box or one of those tent thingys you can buy at the pet store for them and put blankets in. The cats could curl up in the little kitty tent and it would help trap their own body heat with them inside.
