Saw an ad on CL for a Male Ragdoll... clicked on the link and this is what the ad said:

beautiful 3year old male ragdoll cat, 4 paw declaw, fixed, needs to go, we have and dog and unfortunatly the cat wont get along with it, so i can't have him peeing where he feels like, he is box trained, but because of the dog, he wont go to his box, would be great for home with no dogs, he is very friendly loving cat $50 rehome fee,

So I am thinking ... well... maybe they haven't tried working with the cat. I have seen that quite a bit in rescue.

So this is what I wrote:

Instead of trying to get rid of the cat, why not try to solve the problem?

Here is some advice:
Inappropriate peeing can OFTEN be a sign of illness. And in cats, stress can induce urinary tract infections. Take him to the vet.

Then:

First, get some Feliway diffusers. This is good for inappropriate peeing. And reducing stress in a cat.
Then - get some enzymatic cleaner like Nature's miracle and a black light (pee glows in the dark) and TREAT the pee spots thoroughly. I mean really soak them.
Get some Dr. Elsey's Cat attract litter or litter additive and put it in his pan.

Make sure you spend a lot of time with him. Is the dog new or is this an ongoing issue? Does the dog "bother" the cat?? Train the dog not to.

Hope that helps.

I suppose it's easier to just dump the cat, but if he is sweet and you love him, try these things.

This is the answer I got back, censored for the foul language:

GEEE THANKS ALOT FOR MAKING MY CAT SOUND LIKE ITS SICK, CONTRARY TO WALT DISNEY, SOME ANIMALS DONT GET ALONG, THE CAT IS IN PERFECT HEALTH, THE DOG IS TRAINED, I HAVE OWNED ANIMALS FOR 36 YEARS, I THINK I KNOW WHAT I AM DOING, I'M NOT GUNNA SIT HEAR AND PLAY CAT WHISPERER WHILE MY HOUSE BECOMES A LITTER BOX, IF YOUR SO SMART, WHY DO YOU PAY THE REHOMING FEE, TAKE THE CAT, AND PUT HIM IN A HOUSE WITHOUT A DOG, AND WHAT DO YA KNOW, HES JUST FINE. OTHER THAN THAT, MIND YOU OWN BUSINESS!!!!

Here is what I wrote back:
No offense intended and the foul language was not necessary. Good luck rehoming the cat. Sounds like he would be better off with a different owner.

You encounter some of the nicest people (NOT) on CL trying rehome pets, etc.

I would be tempted to just go get the poor cat, but I have no interest in dealing with the rude creature who wrote that message or giving him my hard earned money. I feel very, very sorry for the kitty... who is a beautiful seal bi-color. I have pics if someone wants to see them or may be interested.

Poor kitty! I hope he does find another home! 36 years of having animals huh? I have had animals longer than that but I have learned more from this site in the time I have been a member then in all the time I have had animals. People like that should not have animals... period!

I would like to see the pics!

And some people THINK they know everything and don't need to learn something new.

Poor kitty

With an ad worded like that one I doubt anyone will go and adopt him. No one wants a cat that is peeing on the furniture, and that's what she has emphasized, even if she does say it's related to the dog.

I bet she either dumps him outside (4 paw declawed!) or into the pound.

Oh, what a sweet little guy. I hope he finds a better owner.
Sounds like the real problem is that the new wore off the cat. She may have had animals that long, but I wonder how long she had any of them?

Poor kitty. At least you tried, Addie.
Oh no, thats awful, well the owner can't know that much and care that much about health if the poor kitty has been declawed. If you really want him couldn't you get someone else to go and collect gim? Sounds to me like he is just one really unhappy little chap.Well done for having your say though, sometimes the truth hurts xx
post #8 of 48
Couldn't you rescue him, and then find a home for him if you can't keep him? This is why I don't read ads. That poor cat needs to be out of there.

I hate people who do such things to cats then get a dog, and decide the cat is too much trouble. I hate them. I just hate them.

I'm thinking about rescuing him... and maybe we can place him through the rescue I work with.... color point with all four paws declawed would NOT be difficult to place ... unless the peeing is truly an ingrained behavioral problem. You can bet that he is also reacting to how ANGRY this man or woman is (couldn't tell from the name - Chris).

Since they have declawed the poor cat, thus forcing him forever to be indoors and crippled, they ought to get rid of the dog and not the cat.

Sorry...just not the dog loving type here!

How sad for the kitty. I have a cat that came from a cat/dog home and she was NOT a happy cat. She ended up living (if you can call it that) in the drop ceiling of the basement, didn't like the dogs being able to roam where they pleased, started to run from the humans that owned her. It was terrible to watch, so I waited and talked to her telling her if they'd let me, I'd take her out of there. One day out of the blue, they did ask me if I wanted her. Boom off I went to get the cat carrier. Didn't have to ask me twice. She still has stress issues and licks herself alot but no matter how many times I'm asked if they can have the cat back the answer will be NO! She's doing fantastic here and I will keep her that way no matter what...

they ought to, but they never do. A dog brought in seems to always be more important than the cat who was already there, and the mental attitude that would declaw a rag doll, (my gosh can you imagine how crippled that cat must be) would never be intelligent enough to understand this.

The cat will be much better off out of that horrible house, and I can only be grateful they are charging an adoption fee so the poor kitty won't end up in some torture chamber or lab.

praying Addiebee can rescue this pour soul and find him a home and life he deserves after heaven knows what he has been through so far.

Oh that poor, poor boy... Addiebee, you tried your best hun and in NO way was your response inappropriate. In fact your response was perfect. You have a lot more control that I do because I have told off MANY people who have posted similar ads on Kijiji. Some people just do not DESERVE the love of an animal.

"And some people THINK they know everything and don't need to learn something new." I am so with you on this statement. The kitty looks so calm and even allows to be dressed for the holidays. I hope this kitty gets a more loving home cuz this owner doesn't want to help at all.

you took the words right outta my mouth. Craiglist (sigh) (although my kitty Daisy came to me via Craigslist)
I applaud you for trying! There are too many people who are pet owners who don't know the word "responsibility". Good job at sharing some very helpful advice! I hope the cat ends up in a happy forever home.

I sent out a mass email and posted on the appropriate Yahoo groups about him. I got an email back from a cat-only rescue saying they had heard a couple of OTHER rescues were working on getting him outta there. Man I hope so.
I am sorry you got your feelings hurt. I hope the cat gets rescued. I have never been able to figure out why someone would want a dog over a cat.
Cats are smarter.

Oh, man. That's good. I feel so sorry for that poor kitty. Reading your original post, I got so angry I was shaking. Thanks for keeping on top of this, those people don't deserve having that lovely animal.

Uh, my feelings aren' hurt. I still get surprised by the depths of human stupidity and bad behavior... so it makes me angry. And determined to get that cat out of there. I would go get him but I have no place to put him.

Maybe that's it, some people feel threatened by an animal that's smarter than they are, lol. What I can't grasp is how they justify that the new animal is more important than the original. With enough effort on the part of the owner a compromise can generally be found that leaves both animals in the home and happy.

it's good to know there are others concerned about this kitty. Please keep us updated.
