Since his last check up (Jan 2009) Frodo has lost 3 lbs! I know it is slow weight loss but it is going well, I think. I am feeding them Go! Grain free chicken turkey and duck canned food. I think that the grain free is really helping him. Also, I think that the grain free food is really helping Blue with her vomiting problem.
Yay!

Congratulations! 3 pounds in one year, when it is desired, is a good healthy length of time. Weight loss for cats needs to be very slow, to be safe. Well done!

Thanks! We are very happy about it.

I think that another 4 lbs would be perfect for him to lose. We are hoping that it will be gone in the next 10 months or so. I think that would be an appropriate time for him to lose that much weight.

He weight loss got a little thrown off this year when we moved. He gave up eating canned food and would only eat kibble for a bit. When he eats kibble he gains weight like nuts even though it is the same calories (I strictly measure it!).

Hopefully his weight loss will continue and he will feel better and better.

Oh wow that is great!!
How much does he weight?? 7 pounds of desired weight loss sounds crazy... Jake is around 17 or 18 pounds, and I'm going to be talking to my vet about what his optimal weight should be because he's a little chubby too.

Frodo is 22.1 lbs today. He was 25 last year in January. He should be about 18. He was/is a BIG boy. He has been on a diet for so long but never lost any weight until he was put on a canned only diet.

Yay! Struggling to get some weight off of Archie. I HAVE to leave out dry b/c I have so many cats living communally... but I measure out the dry.. half the general portion in the AM, half in the PM.

And he has lost some weight in the last couple of months. The vet said start with one pound. He really needs to lose like 3 lbs.

I am finding that canned food is great for solving weight issues too..
Did you decrease how much you're feeding calorie wise or just switch from dry to wet??
I switched Jake to wet and he looks slimmer though my scale is unreliable, I'm waiting for his vet visit in 2 months to see if I need to do something else too..

I originally went to the vet and she calculated how many calories Frodo would need in a day to lose weight. He was 24 lbs at the time. She said about 250. He still gained when he was getting that many calories split between canned and kibble. So we dropped it down to about 220.

It seems really low for such a large cat but she said that sometimes that is just how it works out. So, my 7.6 lb cat and my 22.1 lb cat both get the same calories every day.

When I went to all canned I stuck to about the same. They are now getting Go! grain free chicken turkey and duck canned food and that is 212 cal/can. They share 2 cans a day. It is a little lower but I give my little kitty a little dish of kibble (same as canned) in her cupboard (she sleeps in the cupboard over the fridge) so she can have extra if Frodo eats more than his share. But, he is still losing so I am happy.
