Some of you may have read my post about DH's sister catching the strays at her Mil's house. She took three of them a few weeks ago to be vetted, spayed or neutered and we managed to find good homes for all three. Not an easy thing to do in this economy...and with all the cat-lovers in the immediate family maxed out to the limit on cats. (DH & I - 4 and then 1 at his office; Sil - 3 + a dog; other Sil - 3 or 4 + a dog; Mil - 3 + a dog.)

Now Sil's caught three more. Once again, Mil is keeping them in the large bathroom at her house until they recover from their surgeries and calm down a bit. Sil reports they were much harder to catch this time, having seen the first three cats being trapped in cages.

The bad/good news is that someone dented Sil's car at work. When she took it in for service, she remembered that there were cat lovers at the car dealership. So she's found a home for one of the cats, and a lead to another possible good home.

The funny thing is, she ended up trapping a red tabby. He's not a regular at her Mil's. Sil doesn't think he's a stray - he just comes around to visit and eat. She thinks he belongs to her Mil's neighbor. But she decided to have him neutered anyway; heck, he was already in the cage.
We certainly didn't want him getting anyone pregnant. We have got the biggest laugh out of this (I know...we're awful.) He came to visit and ended up neutered. She's going to return him as soon as he has recovered. She said she bet he'd never come back to visit and would probably throw himself off a cliff!

Good for her getting the neighbors' cat done. If they are stupid enough to have an unneutered cat they probably won't even notice the difference.

He'll be a much happier and safer boy now.

We laugh our butts off about that red cat.

Sil left the cage out at her Mil's house with instructions not to leave it out over night (It's cold in NC right now, plus they would need water). I guess her Mil was going to bring it inside before she went to bed. Around 10:00, Sil received a phone call from Mil saying she'd caught a cat. Sil knew that the remaining cats were gray tabby, torti, and black. "What color is the cat?" Sil asked. "Red," her Mil replied. "But we don't have a red cat...." Sil said. Ahh, but she knew who he was. So she went and picked him up that night. The next day, he went for his neuter and the rest is history. A classic case of being at the wrong place at the wrong time...for him anyway.

And you're right, he's almost grown, his owners' should have had him neutered long before now! I hate the attitude that females need to be spayed, but males can go about their business without being neutered, since there isn't the worry of kittens for the male's owners. I even know of idiot people who won't take a female cat because "it will have kittens".

You SIL rocks! You and yourdh and MIL do too

I've had at least four neighborhood cats neutered and one spayed and no one has ever said a thing. My theory is if he's peeing on my trash cans, all bets are off!

Keep up the good work!

Sil and her DH took the red cat back to where he was caught and released him last night. Her DH said when they opened the cage, the red cat looked like a "yellow streak". Sil said she'd never seen a cat run that fast.
She thinks he has taken off for home, never to be seen or heard from again. She keeps saying "I hope he'll be okay...he ran about a hundred miles an hour!" (I don't think he's going to be sending her any thank you notes, that's for sure.)

But, uh oh, she spotted a black and white cat at her Mil's that she's never seen before. She said he was beautiful, with perfect markings. I hope his owners don't have any big plans to show him or breed him, because we all know what happens if he gets caught in the cage.
