OMG! OMG! OMG!

I am finally getting a refund on my taxes for the first time in about 10 years!!!!!

Wait for it......................

Wait for it......................

Wait for it......................

$2,000.92!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
!!!!

That will be going straight into my lap band surgery fund! I've decided that I need some help with losing weight because being as heavy as I am, exercise is really difficult and hard. Hopefully I'll be able to pay for it by the fall. It's $15,000.00!!!!!
And not a penny is covered by insurance.

You did better than most people. A lot of people didn't realize that they received a "tax rebate" this year in the form of lowered withholding. There will be a lot of people who owe some this year, instead of getting a refund.

I'm in Canada, so the tax system is different. There was no lowered withholding tax here. Here we're taxed to death! And the Government is very pleased to let you know about it all year long!!!

Congratulations on your refund. I wait as long as possible because there is not refund coming and I have to dig deep. Enjoy yours.

I know the feeling! Usually I owe between $600 and $2,000.00 per year! Even when I was off on disability I ended up owing money every year!!

What helped me was the fact that I had maxed out my Canada Pension and Employment Insurance contributions for the year, but when I switched jobs, the new place was taking off those deductions from my cheque. So I got that all back because it was in excess of what I was allowed to contribute. Plus I had to buy uniforms and shoes for work, so I was allowed to claim those. And for the last couple years we've been allowed to claim bus passes for public transportation. That helped too. Unfortunately I made too much to allow me to claim any of my medical expenses which were sizable.

I still owe $200 or so from last year, so they'll deduct that, but I'll still be coming out ahead!

If you didn't make changes to your withholding, you should be OK.

By the way, one of the hated "Bush tax cuts" was the elimination of the "marriage penalty," a glitch in the tax law that punished marriage with higher taxes. It was based on sound financial reasoning, but most agreed it wasn't fair. I think that cut is due to expire this year, if it hasn't been re-authorized.

I used to do taxes for a living at one time, but it has been so long and there have been so many changes. I do mine on the computer now and submit electronically by eFile.

If nothing has changed from when I did them, even though you are married you can both still claim "single." Also, you were only married for part of the year, so you should be able to prorate the income and only have to blend the number of months that you were married. So that should help.

Just make sure that you get some tax advice so that you can maximize your claims. It may be more beneficial for one to claim something than the other one etc. My advice would be to actually pick up an electronic tax program and play around with who claims what to see which one works for you.

If you are looking to get your taxes done professionally at some place like H&R Block, be prepared to pay several hundred dollars to have your returns done. The first year I was sick and just couldn't manage to do them myself, I took it to H&R Block. My tax return was very basic.....disability, some medical receipts, and rent.....all of which was nicely added up with adding machine tapes to show the values and total. They charged me almost $300.00 to do that one simple tax return and send it electronically to Revenue Canada. All they had to do was type in values into the required boxes....nothing else: No adding, sorting...nothing.
