ok i need help!
My cat smokey, im giving him metronizadole as instructed by the vet, using a syringe, then wrapping him up in a warm towel and holding his jaws open and then squirt it down his throat, but smokeys clever, he'll cough it back into his mouth hold it for as long as i hold him and then drool it out and shake his mouth to spit it alllll out. so how else can i administer it, the vet said he may actually not take it with food because smokey seems to be very very picky about his food, so do i put it over his kibbles and food, or what?
advice please, cuz i think he only manages to swallow a tiny bit hence the slow improvement in comparison to the fast improvement which i should be seeing as the vet said. what could be advised? thanks

My kitty too is back on Metronidazole . My previous cats I used to just squirt it in their mouths, but not with this guy. He fights me way too much and then just drools out all the medication. So I have to get a little clever.

He is prescribed 1 mL twice a day of this stuff. 1 mL is not too much so I am able to successfully hide it in his wet food. I take a small amount of wet food and I squirt the Metronidazole on top of the wet food, and then take a fork and mix it up and mash it in really well so its hidden and mixed in. I pull up his dry food an hour or so before medication time so he's good and hungry. If he doesn't eat it right away, within about 15 mins, I pull up the bowl, cover it and put it in the fridge for later.

If your kitty is picky about his food, maybe get whatever wet food you know your kitty loves best. For me this was not the traditional healthy food I normally feed him. I went to the store and got him the smelliest canned Fancy Feast which I know is his favorite (he's a Fancy Feast addict). Not the best ingredients in the world but one can is not going to hurt and its more important that he take his medicine right now.

I would not put it over kibble though unless your kitty will eat it up right away, kibble can go bad really fast and I don't think its a good idea to save the wet kibbles for later in the fridge if your kitty doesn't eat right away.

so ive put it over his food and mixed it in very well, in his wet food to clarify.
and he went downstairs sniffed his foods and walked back upstairs gona give it tonite and hopefully by tomorow morning he would have eaten some of it. im going to start him on a homeopathic remedy my uncle told me worked with all cats hes treated so far in london which is Natrum Muriaticum, and try that, as well as Nux Vomica.
his diahrea is gone almost completely his faeces have shape in them so lets hope by end of this weekend hes completely fine.
thanks everyone, will keep it updated. x

do NOT stop metronidazole! go back to squirting on his mouth, but do not stop. And if he didn't eat from the food, don't leave it up to him... Give it to him - don't let him miss a dose - this is an antibiotic... You can mix it with a bit of clam juice, like 1/2 metro, 1/2 clam juice, and squirt it in his mouth with a syringe. As far as what he is doing, yes, he will spit some, foam some, but he will get some too... that is what is important... keep going. Metro is his best bet.

homeopathic s should be used UNDER a vets care.. Yes they are "safe" drugs but they are in fact drugs

Sometimes with a difficult cat I mix the meds with tuna or clam water too, and then squirt it very little at a time into the side of the mouth. This way they never hold enough in the mouth to spit it out. But yes, do get some into him whatever you do - it is a wonder antibiotic and has cured several cats of mine from various things.

Yes, Metro is really amazing for this kind of stuff... There is no better IMO for stomach/digestive problems, colitis, inflammation issues... It is awesome... Too bad it is sooooo damn bitter!

I don't know... I think it is SOOOOO bitter, that nothing really would help!

Once I was wondering why Bugsy was throwing such a fit, and I decided to try the stuff... God, could not wash the taste out of my mouth fora LONG time.... I think the best bet is to get pills and put it inside of a capsule, like a member here does... then butter it up and shove it down the throat...

surprisingly my dog took it just in a touch of butter ... I cant figure that out

cap and butter works for two of my five with pills... One likes the method Strange wings suggests and the other two are semi feral so it = grab and shove then bandage me

When Cleo needs to take Flagyl (metronidazole) for her IBD issues, I ask my vet for the highest strength/smallest dose liquid possible. I can put her dose into a #3 gelcap, and she will swallow it without any drooling or foaming, and she doesn't taste the bitterness. Gelcaps were a Godsend when all three cats got Giardiasis from my sewers backing up several years ago, and all three were on Flagyl!

I've purchased them from several vendors. Here are a few of my favorite. The #3 and #4 are the best size for cats, although a #2 will work when the cat is a bit larger, or the amount needed to put into the gelcap is more.

Here's a great link with info about Gelcaps, size comparisons, and fill quantity.

I always keep them on hand. Right now I'm giving Cleo some pediatric iron drops in a #0 gelcap (it's pretty big), but Cleo is almost 15 pounds, so it isn't too much of a struggle.

You can also try mixing it with a little bit of maple syrup or molasses (or VAL Syrup from a Vet supply). It's sweet, so it will help cancel out the bitterness of the metro...that is, if your kitty is interested in the syrup!

Good luck!

I've had better luck with liquids squirting it into their mouth from the side than straight down the throat. I think that straight down tends to trigger the gag reflex, whereas from the side they swallow to get it gone.
I have yet to develop fast enough reflexes to administer a pill without geting bitten retracting the finger that pushs the pill though. If the vet can't put a med in liquid form I make sure to have neosporin and band aids handy for me.

That's why you have pill poppers!
