Biotene

I have seen this mentioned in a couple of threads... and I am thinking of getting some for my boys. A couple of them in particular ... their gums are better with the program I have had then on the last 6-8 weeks, but in Jake's case, there is some nasty inflammation right at the gumline ... He is better... his breath more often than not ranges from not noticeable to tolerable.

I wanted to get some feedback on this and talk to my vet about it.

I have not used the pet versions but I will say the human works small wonders

I was at the dentist yesterday and discussed it with him... He said if kitty has sensitive, inflamed gums, like gingivitis, stomatitis, or what you are describing, to NOT brush, use a gel.
He gave me another one to try, and compare it with Biotene, but I was reading the reviews online, and I am not so sure about it... I will see it... It is very easy to use it though... I have a feeling I will go back to Biotene after it is over... He said Biotene is very good too, feel free to use it...
The name of the gel he has me on it right now is Maxi Guard Oral Cleasing Gel.
The advantage of this one over Biotene? Even easier to use, if you can believe it! Just a pea size dab on the top gum of each side About on the top of the pre-molar). Kitty will lick and it will foam all over the mouth, and voila!
I don't know... They swear by this gel, but the reviews are that it oxides pretty quickly, so the product spoils somewhat quickly... Aside from that, the reviews are very good...
I like that Biotene is a Company that has been around FOREEEEEEVER and they KNOW what they are doing...
Anyways, will try this out, and let you know my thoughts...
But IMO Biotene is the way to go for your boy...

Thanks Carolina. In the early going, I tried using the pet tooth brush on Archie- who does have early perio disease and the brush came out of his mouth with the bristles covered in blood.

OK - I said - this is NOT good. Need to find a better way. HIS teeth and gums are definitely looking better. Jake had deadly breath... as did Ghost. It smelled of rot and decay. All three are better, but I want to keep up with the improvements.

Apparently this Maxi Guard is really good for the Breath... But I just trust Biotene better... Such an old, established brand, you know?

They have 2, and I have used both on Bugsy... There is one that is a stronger one, for more inflamed gums, Called Biotene Antiseptic Oral Gel - this is for those gingivitis cases.... Probably for Jake... You use it for 2 weeks, 2x a day... Then the maintenance gel, is the one that you use it instead of brushing... That you use on everybody, once a day... or as often as you can...
My dentist said yesterday that even though the package said once a day, if you can't do once a day on both sides, you can do one side on one day, and the other day the other side, or both sides every other day...
Since I use that bag to restrain Bugsy to give him his meds, I just do it right after... It is SO easy! Dab dab, done.

Ghost's premolars were ENCASED in tartar. Ugh!

Since I have been doing the CET chews, PlaqueOff and enzyme toothpaste (rubbing on his gums/teeth when he will let me) I am beginning to see some of the tooth emerge from the calculus!! yay!! I could even pick off a little bit with my fingernail....

I have tried many different products on my cats' teeth/gums and the Biotene Antiseptic gel is by far the most effective. Two of my three cats are prone to gingivitis and the gel, used as directed, significantly reduced the redness in 5 - 7 days. I like it because there's no odor to it (so they can't smell it coming) and it's a nice thick gel that doesn't run all over them and me.
I just bought the Water Additive and Maintainence gel. I'm a big believer in prevention and am very satisfied with this product.

Where can you purchase the Veterinary Biotene? I've had really good luck with the CET pet toothpaste (sold at my vet's office) but I'd love to see how well the Biotene gel works. Lola has some redness on her gum line that is still there with the CET. Cleo is the only one who actually lets me brush. Maggie and Lola just lick the dentifrice, so I'm thinking the Biotene might work better for them.

I use the human Biotene myself, and I just love it. I am extremely sensitive to the ingredients in most toothpastes (due to an auto-immune disorder much like stomatitis/geographic tongue) and Biotene is about the only one I've found that doesn't cause a reaction.

I ordered it through Amazon.com and it was shipped by Entirelypets.com. It was reasonably priced and shipped fast. If you google "Biotene veterinaran", a lot of retailers carry it.

Thanks! I only have a little of the CET left, so I will be getting something soon. Looks like the perfect time to try it!
