I live in a studio apartment. One that supposedly doesn't allow cats. -Shhhhh!!! To save space I chucked the bed my predecessor left me and plunked the box spring on the floor. this arrangement suited me fine and apparently some bugs liked it too 'cause they've chewed a whole bunch of holes through the mattress. This was a full year before Aya came into my life.

Whn she was 6 months old my cat Aya started whizing on my bed. We got her checked out and put on prescription food (apparently her ph was bad). But the whizzing continued. The Vet reassures me there is nothing wrong with her now.

Its very hard to get the cat urine smell out of bedding, so several hundred dollars of bedding and cleaner later, I decided to stike at both problems and replace my bed with a more western style one, actually a sofa-bed that is off the floor with a metal frame and a synthetic matress -hah, bugs eat that!- . I swapped out all the bedding for fresh at the same time so nothing smells like cat piss anymore (crosses fingers) It's only the equivalent of a US twin size but it's huge in that room and made me realize that the Japanse style table I use to keep my computer on is too big (its dining size really) and I need to replace a perfectly good table with a smaller one to feel comfortable doing my work at it.

Aya spent most of yesteday afternoon hiding while the bed assembly guys were here and then was completely wigged out for the rest of the day by the re-arrangement of her house.

I don't even want to think about the money I've spent making my life and Aya's fit together like glue...

Yeah, totally worth it. It's cold here and I got home late. Someone was tailing me around waiting for me to sit down and put the blanket in my lap so she could snuggle.

What we won't do for our furkids!

ETA: Have you ever tried using Zero Odor for the cat pee? One of my cats pees outside the box sometimes, so I'm familiar with the problem. The Zero Odor seems to work fairly well at getting rid of the pee smell.

Just an FYI.

We've come to love Aya through your posts here and agree that she is worth every penny spent

Do you have a waterproof mattress pad for your bed? If you can't find one locally I'm sure you can order it online. Best product EVER. Then if she pees on the bed you only have to wash the cover and the entire mattress won't stink.

Haven't been able to find one here in Japan. I have a foam pad and a soft cover over my new sofabed. My mom sent me a vinyl cover for my old bed and guess who shredded it? One nice thing about having my new been off the ground is that its much harder for her to use it as a scritching post.

I've caught her posturing to pee on my new bed but thankfully no whizzing yet.

I think that one of her issues is just that she's an only cat living in a small studio. She's very bright and active, and she's bored.

I was thinking of something like this: http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_1...0070921x00003a

When we were little we had futons on our bunkbeds, and since my brother was a bedwetter I'm sure we had something on his bed, but I don't know if my mom got it in a Japanese store or at the Navy Exchange. Try looking in the kid's section. Even little Japanese kids wet the bed sometimes
