Does Tiger Woods need to apologize to the public?

News just broke that Tiger is going to speak publicly for the first time since the accident that broke his personal infidelities wide open. Part of the planned statement includes an "apology for his behavior" as well as word about his past and future.

So my question is, does he really owe the public or even his fans an apology?
NO. No. No.
No absolutely not! This is between him and his wife and needs to stay that way.
no
I wonder who has advised him to do this - it may be something to do to save his endorsement funds?, but really! enough of this already.
I agree with everyone- he doesn't need to apologize...
I am sick of him. I wish he would go away! Just when you thought it was safe to turn on your television again.....
I think it's silly that it was turned into such a show in the first place. But, people are easily amused I guess.
No, there has been far too much publicity already and now we have our own celebrity sex scandals over here, it just too much

I was sick of him before all this.

He should apologize to his wife, his kids, the rest of their family, and the women he fooled around with (for bringing them into that circus), and his right hand (for overlooking its offers of companionship that would have kept him out of this situation), in that order. Not us. He didn't do anything to us.

Well said. And for all of the above mentioned people, it should just be allowed to die -- they've been exposed to enough public scrutiny.

I'm so sick of celebrities airing their private sex lives/marital woes etc in the media! I know! I know! The media feeds on it and it sells! But I still am sick of it! IMHO it's no ones business but his what happened and he doesn't need to apologize to anyone but his wife and family.

There are just some things that don't belong in the media and one of them is who slept with whom!

Boy, listening to the media and PR people going on and on and on about it yesterday I thought I was being totally cold-hearted for not caring. And I definitely agree with all of you - he doesn't owe the public anything. He owes his family a LOT by way of apologies, but not the public.

Who cares that he's a pro-athlete? I'm sure he was a role model, and still is for a lot of young golfers. And should be - for playing GOLF. But he's still human, even if his abilities at golf seem superhuman. He was apparently an idiot when it came to what he could and couldn't do with his weewee no matter how smart he is about playing golf.

Maybe this could be a teachable moment for those kids that do look up to him. No one is perfect. There are no heros like Superman who almost never messes up. For the older ones - it's really important that you think about others and not just what feels good at the time. Look at all the people he hurt by not thinking things through and not being responsible.

I agree with this..
It is not like he was a role model for cheaters who want to get on the right path, as far as I know he never said anything about his personal relationships- was a role model for golfers or people who dream of succeeding at a sport!! Him being a role model had nothing to do with his personal relationships...

Just more tabloid, media trash. It's pathetic.

I think he definitely needs to address his fans and the public, and without a doubt needs to publicly apologize to his family and sponsors. Is it fare for him to publicly humiliate his wife and family without publicly apologizing? Is it fare to his fans, supporters, those who support his sponsors who pay him millions?

I just watched the entire press conference, or should I say speech written for and recited by Tiger Woods. I feel more sorry for his family and his mistresses then him, he has done nothing but avoid the public, and now given nothing but a less then sorry reading of a script for his proven misconduct..............
He should have apologized for his extra marital affairs and the other women he hurt in the process. He was to vague and to desperate in the words of somebody else!
I watched bits of it but does he really mean it? Ashley Cole begged Cheryl Cole last year and apologised and all that and he has now done it again to the poor girl. A leopard never changes its spots and i could not forgive all that or ever trust him again. x

i found it outragous that it was headlines in our news that it was the main story and our new was was pushed underneath it

I never want to hear his name, see his face again. It is overkill. It is boring. I mute the tv whenever they start to talk about him.

Just before the 911 attacks, the media was all a buz about some other stupid thing. Something that makes no difference to anything. After the attack, the media was saying how unimportant the previous news story was. "We must focus on the important things" they said. America was pre occupied with foolishness.

Well, look how soon we forget.

I'll tell you what he's desperate for. He's desperate to get back onto the golf course to make money. He can't do that without first making a (paltry) speech. It is a checkmark on his to-do list, my friends - that's what yesterday was all about. Don't be fooled. For some reason I strongly feel he's all about me-me-me as in "Hey I'm the greatest of all time. Why should a great like me be forced into retirement?" My gut tells me he wants to make a comeback a la Drew Barrymore (remember her rehab merry-go-round in the 1980s?)

I can't stand his face. Never have, never will. Everytime I see his goofy lips and other goofy facial features I get angry. And this was way before the scandal.

Unless a celebrity has actually done something to us I don't see why they should apologize to us. If he endorsed a product that he knew wasn't what he claimed, that's our business. Personally I don't know why the public feels the need to worship public figures, they're just people...

+1

I'm so sick of Tiger Woods. And I also mute the TV whenever they start talking about him.

I hate that this was made into a media "event", with every news program leading with it, and big debates between people afterwards about how he did.. Ho-hum.

And the "apology" itself - I muted it. But I looked over my shoulder every once in awhile, and I swear, the "invited guests" looked like wax-works. They all looked like they had been pulled in off the street and told to not move a muscle, not even in their faces, and keep their hands on their laps.

i actually felt sorry for him...
Because I don't think he owed it to us to make this speech, and I agree with cheylink that it seemed like it was in the words of someone else...
But really he has no choice because his career is dead unless he publicly scorned himself and admitted to the world he's a cheater It is sad..
I don't think if someone cheats he should be punished by ending his career. No one in the real world gets that sort of punishment (unless the affair was at the workplace), so celebrities shouldn't either.

Actually, there are companies out there who specialize in repairing public images. That "apology" speech is just step one. Personally, I don't care what he does on or off the golf course. But then neither do I think what he does (or what any athlete or celebrity does) is worth the millions he (they) get. We have our priorities so screwed up in this country. Pay the people who entertain us millions and pay the people who teach our children and save our lives peanuts.

I didn't see the apology, faux media event (done during the Olympics, so that bigger news comes along in a matter of hours), nor have I read the transcript. I did, however, "have" to listen to a couple hours of discussion of it on my afternoon talk program on the radio. I figure if anyone is going to cut through the chaff it would be Dave and Lois and their listeners. And cut they did!

Tiger did say that he will be back on the PGA Tour, but didn't know when. Said he needed to work on the most important things to him - his marriage and his relationship with his children. Said that his actions, not words, would prove himself to Elan. May have been PR, may have been part of the actions that Elan needed to start. Remember, he doesn't do media stunts well. He is a private person and a speech like that would be difficult for him under the best of circumstances.

Said he was in therapy. I just don't think what he did is anything near an "addiction" - I think it's like a rock star who realizes he can have almost any chick in the audience, and then does. Tiger figured this out late because his father sheltered him early in his career, and then loosened the reins once he got married.

He didn't apologize to the chicks he banged. I don't know why he should, frankly. Maybe because I've been in Eran's position (once...only once). Those girls got what they wanted out of it - they got bragging rights to having been with a superstar for a night or more. They got gifts worth a bunch. Now they got more than they bargained for - notoriety, their 15 minutes of fame. They knew he was married. Did they really think he would leave her and his two children for them? Gimme a break. Maybe they were stupid and thought he would. Their problem, not his.

But one thing that he did say that made me think it wasn't just all PR was that he said that he wanted to get back to Buddhism that his mother taught him. He didn't say that he needed to get back to religion or Christianity, which would be the majority of the people listening to him. He also didn't ask for forgiveness. He said that he hoped people could believe in him again. Once again - message for Elan or his fans, or both?
