Cat Carriers

I need to purchase a new cat carrier, my old one is very heavy and the metal clasps are not working well. I would like to get one of the mesh/canvas ones because they are lightweight but not sure if our cats could tear the mesh with their claws. I also like this type because you can put kitty in from the top as opposed to the ones with the opening on the side only. Does any one have the mesh/canvas type of carrier and does it hold up well to kitty claws?

I saw this one today:

I dont have the one you linked to but I have 2 soft sided carriers and they have been fine, they are not great for heavier cats however.

The shelter has some of the denim and yellow paw print petsmart ones and they have held up well through many uses

ETA one thing I remembered was we had to 'retrofit' the top of them because the velcro closure wore off quickly so we added a bigger heavy duty velcro strip

My experience is similar. I have a carrier similar to the one in the OP's link, and the mesh seems fairly sturdy.

Thanks for your replies. I feel more confident about purchasing one now.

I really like this carrier:

http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...ductId=2750635

It does not have a top-door, but it stays "popped up" (some of the less expensive square-ended ones collapse) and the mesh is so clear and the holes are very small so claws don't get through them. I had a kitten claw a hole in the "Sherpa" bag mesh once.

Just my 2 cents.

I have several mesh carriers of various types (Sherpa, Doggone Good, some generic one) and I've never had a cat put holes in one. If they REALLY tried they probably could though.

This is the one I have:

It is a CFA cat carrier... I never had a problem with it, even with Bugsy, who is pretty heavy (18lbs). It would be small to travel with him, but OK to take him to the vet and such. No problem with the mesh. I do have both a hard (bigger crate) and a soft carrier though...

Carolinalima, that is a really nice carrier. Did you buy it in a store or on-line?

I went shopping for a new mesh/canvas carrier but came home empty handed. I am probably too picky. The ones I looked at either don't have enough room, don't close easily from the top or are made very flimsy. I looked at one of the more expensive airline carriers but had difficulty with the zipper(s). I would go back to the original carrier I have if I could but they no longer make that style, i.e. it is over 30 yrs. old. I guess I really got my money's worth out of it.

We have 1 of the Petmate ones you linked, 1 Samsonite (which is similar, but I like it's construction better) and 2 Rubbermaid Pets soft carriers that are no longer sold (they were designed by Graco according to the original packaging). We still have 1 plastic carrier for "just in case" we catch a stray cat hanging around and I need to use something that is bleachable (is that a word? LOL).

Of those I like the Petmate and Samsonite best. Nabu likes the Rubbermaid carriers best. When we moved 6 years ago, we had all plastic carriers and two of them had handles snap when we were walking from the car to our new apartment. I could have lost 2 of my cats if those carriers had shattered when they landed. After that I switched to soft sided carriers and haven't had an issue since.

I got it online from Amazon, but they no longer carry it... If you google CFA Cat carrier, you will see several people who still carry it - it is not an expensive carrier, priced on low $30s, but it is very good IMO... You will see on the net - the ratings are great too

I have one like this and it is sturdy enough. Its getting a bit small for my boys now though, since they are 14+ pounds. I believe it is the medium size. I need to get them a bigger one.

We purchased the yellow paw print/black one from Petsmart and it's holding up fairly well. It was the only way we were able to get Timmy to the vet as it didn't make the noise a regular cat carrier does. Snuck right up on him!

I've never heard of a cat ripping out the mesh - its pretty tough. But its possible they can figure out how to unzip it (put a twisty loop on the zippers).

Be sure to get a large enough bag to carry the cat. I would not carry a cat any more then about 10-12 lbs - it would be too heavy after that (at least for me).

I had a sphynx rip the mesh out of a carrier I got at petsmrt on the way to a cat show.
It was the one with the print from petsmart.
Carolina the CFA looks good.
I have seen those at the shows.
I use the sturdis.
I have had the round one for a long time but it is small.
