Good evening,

My girlfriend and I have adopted a little kitten from a local petshop, and are getting a little worried about his health and/or general behaviour.

The kitten is said to be approximately 2 1/2 months, and from what the petshop owner told us, was eating quite alot for such a young age. He was waiting to be adopted, along with his little sister, who lived in the same cage as him.

My girlfriend brought the kitten home, 4 days ago (on Wednesday), for the first time, and his eating habits, and energy level seem to fluctuate very much.

The day after, seeing that our little man was getting more and more tired, and had vomited quite a few time, (and that he didn't seem to have any much interest in food) my girlfriend decided to bring him to the vet.

He proceeded with the regular, routine, health check; ears, mouth, temperature and heart beat. He didn't notice anything unusual with our little baby... For the lack of food interest, he gave (er... sold at a very high-price!) us some canned food, which is supposed to help out this situation, but doesn't seem to do much. He also treated the cat for worms, with a so called Profender product, which is basically a liquid gel that he applied to the cat's skin... And finally, to finish everything all off, he told us that he had flees, and sold us another product that is to be applied, like the Profender, but for fleas (I would have opted for the traditionnal worm-pill instead...but my girlfriend fell for the thing - I guess!). We applied the product about an hour ago, reading online that the worm treatment he was given would be worthless, if the cat had fleas... (?)

Now, 2 days later, he doesn't seem to get any better. He barely eats, and still vomits whatever he manages to eat. We tried changing the food, and gave him a little buffet, of 3 types of food, but still didn't fed much at all (that is if he actually did eat some...). We even added water to some food, to make is softer - but no results! We bought a little "Cat-Milk" product, which is sold as a liquid-meal, he drank a little, but nothing to go crazy about.

BUT, for some reason, we dropped a piece of cooked ham to the ground, and he immediately ate it, afterwards roaring as a king, which kinda made it look like he was never fed in the first place! (Oh, and he also did the same for a Popcorn... !?!).

From what my girlfriend told me, he rarely uses the litterbox at all. He did once or twice, which one time, a little 1" worm, came out of his body. Even 40 minutes ago, he vomited again, all the food that his little belly had managed to try and digest. His fur/coating doesn't look very soft, like it did the first day. It looks a little greassy, yet very dry. His noze is pretty dry too, but he doesn't have any signs of "rice" worms in the rectum...

As I am writing this, at 6:44 Eastern time, the kitten still looks very tired, and is sleeping right beside my computer. As soon as we try and wake him up to play with him, he almost immediately goes back to his snoozing position, and goes back to sleep.

We are getting a little worried here, since his health/behaviour doesn't seem to improve. He is so cute, and we love him so much, that we need some advice on what to do!

Please, if you would know anything that could help us, or so, please respond to this thread, and let us know what you would do...

Thank you all in advance, it is very much appreciated.

Karl

It sounds like you have one very sick little kitten. The bad news is that kittens can go downhill very quickly, especially if they are vomiting or have diarrhea.

It's time to give him anything he will eat. Smelly wet cat food (canned food) is often a good bet; another is meat baby food, but be very careful that onion and garlic are not on the ingredient list. The kitten may just not be recognizing the food you're giving him as "food." That is a common problem with dry food.

Profender works just fine for some worms, but of course, fleas are a big problem, too.

It would be easy to blame the pet store for these problems; they have a bad reputation for selling sickly animals. But really, any kitten from any source can be sick, and the change in home can make the problem worse. And he may be missing his sister, too.

If the kitten shows signs of serious lethargy or unresponsiveness, it's time to get him to a emergency vet clinic.

I'm sorry you're having so much trouble with this little one; it sounds like you already love him and want to do the best for him.

Hi there...
Profender is a very good product, I wouldn't be worried there.

What worries me, is the fact that he is not eating, drinking and is very lethargic... In kittens, things can go downhill VERY fast. If you don't have a vet open, I would take the little guy to an ER vet TONIGHT.
Also, at this point, give him anything to eat, if he eats ham, give him ham. Boiled chicken, whatever - kitten gotta eat something.
But please, into the carrier, to the vet, IMO that's what I would do.

Do you know what he was eating before you got him? Do you have the same food?

Thanks for the fast answers, it is very appreciated.

Unfortunately, there is no "emergency vet" anywhere close to here, it seems. I have never been into such a situation, and it seems all vets are closed, and that there are no pet emergencies anywhere near...

No, we have not changed it's food, from the time of him being at the petshop... We actually bought that one, along with two other types and grades, just in case he would not like it...

I cut some more little pieces of ham, and now he doesn't want to eat them at all... He is, very sleepy, and pretty unresponsive to anything we do (he's been more or less like this since we got him), but the strange thing, is that he gest some energy "boots" and starts playing at times, but then again, goes back to sleep fast within the next following minutes.

By what you're describing, it sounds like this little one is very, very poorly and I fear that if you do not get kitty to a vet tonight, kitty may not make it. Can you get out the Yellow Pages of your phone book and look under "Veterinarians" -- call all of them. Even local ones that are closed often have a message on their answering machine giving instructions on who to contact in the case of an EMERGENCY. Start calling all of them. If no luck, is there not a neighboring town or city you can drive to? You've just GOT to get this poor little one into a Vet tonight, some way, some how, or he will likely not make it, I'm afraid. Please, get out the phonebook ASAP, start looking.

This is generally what kittens do, they sleep sometimes 16-18 hours a day and wake up to play for a little bit, eat, poop and go back to sleep.

However the issue with your kitten not eating is huge and I think he needs to go see a vet again very soon. They can force feed him through a tube, if kittens don't eat for a long period of time their organs can shut down.

As an aside did you buy or adopt the kitten? I don't know what kind of store sells kittens with fleas, that's terrible. You may want to report the store.

I have no other suggestions than finding a vet as soon as you can - but prayers for you and the little one - and thank goodness he found such a good home with people who are trying to help him.

Congratulations on your new kitty. He does sound rather puny at the moment, but I hope he's on the mend soon. It's very common for kitties to be "out of sorts" when in a new environment. They're experiencing new humans, new smells, new sounds. He may also be missing his sister.

To help with eating, try taking a bit of the canned food the vet gave you and adding a bit of water to it. Mash it all together and warm it in the microwave for a couple of seconds. Don't get it too hot! Test it for warmness before offering it to your little guy.

You can take a chicken breast or chicken tender and boil it in plain water with no seasonings until done. Let it cool a bit, then shred it. Add some of the water to the shredded chicken until it's the consistency of chicken salad. See if he'll eat that.

You can also try the homemade kitten formula to see if that helps him. You can find the recipe here: http://www.thecatsite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=46295

It's very, very important that you get that little guy to eat and drink. As a previous poster mentioned, little kittens can go downhill very quickly. It's dangerous for them to go without food and water for an extended period of time.

Call your vet's office, too. They should have information on who to contact in case of an emergency. If they don't, call around, even to the next nearest city, to find someone who can help you.

I hope you can find some vet.
Prayers for him to be ok.
The pet store had know right to sell him so young but some pet stores are known for that.
He sounds real sick to me and I know a lot of about young kittens.

The things you describe make me think your kitten is very sick. I agree that he needs to be seen by a dr. In the meantime, can you puree some wet cat food in a food processor or blender and feed it to the kitten with a syringe or medicine dropper. If cats don't eat, their liver can be affected. I with you the best with your little cat.

FYI - I was communicating with the OP by PM, and he was looking for an ER vet to take the little guy to. I instructed him to call all the vets in town to check their answer machine for an emergency... He was also going to check to see if there was an ER vet in the nearest city. He said he was going to see what they could do to help the little guy. For the looks of it, he probably already went in, since he is offline and not responding, lets keep our fingers crossed for this little one!

Thanks Carolina!

I am such a softie, I get SO choked up with stories about people taking in the little ones... sometimes I don't even want to read the forums because I'm afraid of what might make me cry

I hope Karl gets some good news on that little guy, it sounds like they have really fallen for him!
