Brittany is 18, spayed, lost a lot of weight 5ish years ago, and is indoor. A month ago or so we took her to the vet since her appetite went away but Pepcid AC fixed that, she's even put on some weight. The vet said her kidneys
and liver were comprimised but not severely.
That's all I can think of for background.

Since last night, she's been trying to pee frequently but only able to manage a few drops. She has peed normally too though. There were a few pink drops near her litter box too. She's also acting unusually alert.

What can this mean?
What can we do? We would like to avoid the vet.

I'm sorry but you CANNOT, if you care about your cat, "avoid the Vet" in this case. Frequent trips to the litterbox, peeing small frequent amounts that are "pink drops" (this is blood in the urine, by the way. The bacteria in the urinary tract has inflamed the lining of the urinary tract so much so that the lining is raw and bleeding) is indicative of a URINARY TRACT INFECTION and if left untreated, not only will your dear cat continue to suffer, but she will end up with a severe and life threatening Kidney Infection.

She's in pain. She needs to see a Vet NOW - today, ASAP. There is no way around this. There is no time to sit and wait.

There is no home cure for a urinary tract infection (UTI).

There is no over-the-counter treatment for it.

As in humans, urinary tract infections are very very uncomfortable, I can tell you this from first hand experience. It is a discomfort that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. When you (pet or human) have a UTI, you feel tremendous burning and pressure feeling above the bladder area....you feel a constant urgency to pee and even when you do pee, it's only small amounts, and you do not feel any relief, and 10 minutes later you feel like you have to pee again (this is why your cat keeps going back to the litterbox)......and sometimes it actually really "burns" when you do pee, because the urine irritates the very inflamed lining of the urinary tract and namely the urethra (the little tube that urine passes through just before it exits the body). The pain and pressure and burning and discomfort feels unbearable, worse than a toothache. It is unrelenting until proper treatment is started (antibiotics). It is torture. I have dealt with UTIs for 25 years of my life, and I have had cats who've had them, too.

Your poor cat needs to be seen by a Vet today, there is no other alternative. The Vet will try to obtain a urine sample, and will start your kitty on proper antibiotics.

Here is a link with information about Feline Urinary Tract Infections:

Please do not allow your dear cat to continue to suffer as she is clearly doing. She is more alert because she is in PAIN. Please - find it in your heart to get her into the Vet today. It is so cruel to allow a cat to suffer.

Vet bills, unfornatunately, are something we take on when we take on a cat. I echo the plea to please tend to your cat. Not to, amounts to neglect.

I'm sorry - I've been through this with my boy - you can't avoid the vet with this one. Please call asap, describe the problem thoroughly, and get an urgent appointment - like today as early as possible. If your vet is closed, they should have a contact with an ER vet. Please go in - if your cat is blocked, it could be fatal in a matter of hours. In any event, she's in pain and needs attention now.

Good luck, and let us know what happens.

You should consider this an emergency. Unfortunately, cats don't know when it is the weekend and the vet office is closed. You owe it to your cat to take care of him, when he needs it, not at your convenience. I certainly hope your cat will be okay, but a urinary tract infection is not going away by itself and it will only get worse without treatment.

Thankyou the_food_lady,farleyv, darlili, and blueeyedgirl5946.

We took her to the clinic right after I read the_food_lady's reply. We're squirting 1 ml of a white antibiotic in her mouth twice a day. She seems to be recovering but it's hard to say for sure at this point.
By the way, her blood test results were good.

She'll be 19 in a few days.

Well done, getting her seen right away, and thanks for coming back to update. Her age is a testament to your loving care.

Glad to hear her bloodwork is good, so her kidneys are not in any danger now?

You might want to give her a little probiotic while she is on the antibiotic, as it can cause stomach upset and diarrhea. Probios, benebac, or even a little yogurt every day will help.

Be sure to give the antibiotic with food.

Otto,
The vet said "she looks like a kidney cat", that her kidneys were small, and that her breath was bad - all kidney trouble symptoms. Still the tests were ok.

We will try your yogurt suggestion, she will probably like it.
