It is a real tragedy what happened earlier today to a Luge athlete. Many have wondered how safe the sport really is. Nonetheless, I feel sad for the family who lost their young son.

The opening ceremony is about to begin and it is always nice to see what they have planned. I like the Summer Olympics much more, but do like certain events in the winter Olympics.

Is anyone else going to watch tonight and onward?

I will be watching it as soon as it comes on.
They showed what happened on the news and it is so sad.
I feel bad for that guy and his family.

Watching the opening ceremonies right now. I hate how the Canadian anthem was sung.

Loved those groovy pants the Azerbijan delegation wore.

I'm watching. I think Canada has the best winter outfits! I also enjoyed Sarah Mclachlan's singing. I love the procession of the different countries. I watched a bit of the ski jumping, which just seems insane to me, and I like to ski! I just can't imagine taking that high of a jump, and just staring straight down. The loss of the athlete from Georgia is horrible, what a tragic loss for that country.

I watched the Opening Day Ceremonies but they were not near as spectacular as the Summer openinings in China, I never saw anything that fantastic.

I no longer have cable, so I am unable to watch TV. But I just ordered a pair digital converters from Ebay. Hopefully they will get here soon as it is being shipped from only about 120 miles south of here.

We'll be watching them here and there, especially the hockey.
My aunt and uncle are actually leaving tomorrow to go see them live. They live next door and we'll be puppy sitting their beagles for them while they are gone.

I'm watching. I really liked the opening ceremonies, especially the native influence. I'm DVRing everything but I'll fast forward through half of it. Looking forward to the short track skating, figure skating, and some of the ski/snowboarding events!!

I will be watching. My husband loves snowboarding so we are especially interested in the snowboard cross and halfpipe. We were thrilled with the freestyle moguls both mens and womens. And its the first time I can remember yelling for the Nordic combined, what a thrilling finish.

We watched the opening ceremonies last night night. DVR is wonderful and so were the ceremonies. I loved it. My husband and I agree we will remember the snowboarding beginning, the whales crossing the floor and the eastern fiddlers. But the thing I loved most and will never forget is

KD Lang.
Singing Hallelujah. Absolutely stunning.

Congratulations Canada. So far the games have been awesome.

I would agree. China's was beautiful, for sure, and I did enjoy them. They're trying to improve their standing in the world community, but their money would have been better spent improving their human and animal rights efforts, which are abysmal. I liked these opening ceremonies...I found them charming and appropriate, and wonderful in their own right.

I'll be watching as much as I can. And I got a Wii for Christmas and have been practicing my Ski Jumping and Slaloming in preparation for the Olympics (as if I would ever participate, at age 56!! - but it's fun to pretend!!!!!) I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the Olympics. Love hearing all the stories of the athletes, and even though am from the USA, am so glad that Canada finally won gold on their own turf last night

We are not watching the olympics in protest, but we and our children will be paying for them for many decades to come. Original cost was thought to total about $6.6 million; so far BC is up to (and the amount is climbing) $6 BILLION in debt for the olympics.

BC is closing dozens of schools and has fired 900 teachers (so far) to cut costs. 25,000 surgeries have been cancelled for the same reason. A new law was made that the police can enter your house or other property at any time in Feb. or March and seize ANY anti-olympic materials. Our civil rights are being trampled on.

We have a new tax hitting BC on July 1st; because of the olympic debt we will start paying 13% tax on necessities like water, electricity, and heating oil; personal services (hairstylists, accountants, lawyers); veterinary care; membership fees (ex: gym); new homes; landscaping; vitamins; summer camps; gasoline; taxi fares; postal stamps; car services and maintenance; bus tickets; electrical and plumbing services; dentist fees and some doctor fees. Sadly, that's not even the complete list. To top it off, income taxes here will be rising above the 40% mark.

No wonder there are so many protests! The olympics have become a scam that gives developers and investors a huge income, and the tax payers carry the burden. Montreal just now finished paying off their debt for the 1976 olympics! ($1.6 billion).

I feel bad for the athletes, but the olympic committee's deeds need some serious rethinking and an outside audit.

They are cutting surgeries and introducing HST in Ontario even without additional Olympic costs. It seems to be a non-issue here, the Conservatives are fighting HST (it has already passed without little public consultation) but no one cares.

However, I do agree, the costs are insane and there is no reason to be overbudget by that much (although I don't think the $3 billion for the Canada Line and highway improvements should be included in the Olympic budget numbers, they were planned anyway, just pushed ahead because of the Olympics - however if BC had waited they could have got the newer infrastructure grants so maybe)

Oh and don't you know, under HST our lovely federal government is giving tax cuts and no one will be worse off or have a tax hike

The improvements that were planned anyway might have been shelved, perhaps indefinitely, or at least postponed until a fiscally responsible time. But they were needed now for the increased traffic the Olympics brings.

But what am I saying? Fiscally responsible? The politicians are on a drunken spending spree... what's a few billion more? Easy to squeeze out of the apathetic Canadian taxpayers.

I haven't been watching

Last week I was so tired from my Prednisone high that I was sleeping from 5:30 pm and missed the opening ceremonies

And Saturday and Sunday I was either too busy sleeping or trying to declutter my apartment so all I caught was some of the qualifying speed skating. I did see Cindy Klassen skate! Pretty happy to have tuned in for that. But other than that one skate, I haven't seen any of the Olympics.

I'll have to keep an eye out for the ski jumping, figure skating and curling. Those are the events that I really enjoy. Maybe even hockey as it gets more into the advanced games.
