I've always wondered what to call this coloring/marking on my Gypsy:

From what I see she is a Shaded Silver Patched Tabby. Very pretty - where did you get her from? Silvers are not a common color in the general cat population unless there is a purebred in there.

Thanks, GoldenKitty. She is a Maine Coon. Her brother, Chester, also has a very pretty coat!

This is Chester. What would you call his coloring/marking?

Her registration papers should say what color she is.

I would say that Chester is a black silver ticked tabby. Looks a bit too pale to be a smoke, but black smoke is another option, should see a pic from the front to be more sure.

He's a black silver tabby (classic tabby).

Silver tabby - I've seen some stunning silver tabby MC's at the shows - are they show quality cats?????
Yep easy if they are Maine Coons - it will be on their papers.

IMO the top one isn't Silver. Looks like a Brown Tortie Tabby to me.

You are so right about the papers - that hadn't occurred to me!

Gypsy is described as a Blue Ticked Torbie
Chester is described as a Black Silver Ticked Tabby

Thanks, everyone!

Very strange. They don't look a bit ticked to me. Not even a heterozygote ticked tabby will show off that kind of classic tabby pattern on the body.

I guess I don't understand exactly what ticking is ... for both of these kitties, their individual hairs are colored at the tips, and become closer to white as you get closer to the body.

Ticked tabby is the agouti "pattern" seen in the Aby and the Somali. This is a black silver ticked tabby (a Somali): http://amaranti.se/kullar/kullsex/im...1maj05_023.jpg

Here's a brown ticked tabby (an Aby): http://www.catfacts.org/abyssinian-cat-facts-2.jpg

As you can se there's no really visible pattern as you see in a spotted, mackerel or classic tabby.

The cats shown in this thread are absolutely not ticked tabbies. Not only do they not look a bit like it, it's not an approved pattern in Maine Coons.

It's normal for a tabby to have hairs that are colored differently at the tipsor have bands of color of the hairs (and many cats have lighter fur close to the body) but if they also have stripes they are a mackerel tabby rather than a ticked tabby, and if they have swirls and a 'bullseye' they are a classic tabby.

My cat Harlequin is a brown ticked torbie (or ticked patched tabby) although since she is a DSH she does have more stripes on her legs/tail than you would see on say an Abyssinian. This photo shows Harlequin next to her littermate Blaze. As you can see Blaze also has a lot of "ticking" (banded hairs) even though he is a mackerel tabby.

This is their other littermate, Spot, who is a ticked tabby (brown ticked tabby with white):

You can also see ticked tabbies in lots of other breeds (like BSHs of course ).

Where is ticked tabby not approved for MCOs? It's approved in Fifé and TICA, also the Maine Coon Breeders & Fanciers Association lists it as an approved color. CFA propably doesn't approve it as they seem to have very strict color list (atleast for BSHs..)?

NorthernGlow, this is what the CFA Maine Coon standard has to say about the ticked tabby pattern:
http://www.cfa.org/breeds/standards/maine.pdf

DISQUALIFY: delicate bone structure. Undershot chin, i.e. the
front teeth (incisors) of the lower jaw overlapping or projecting
beyond the front teeth of the upper jaw when the mouth is closed.
Crossed eyes. Kinked tail. Incorrect number of toes. White buttons,
white lockets, or white spots. Cats showing evidence of
hybridization resulting in the colors chocolate, lavender, the
Himalayan pattern; or unpatterned agouti on the body (i.e.
Abyssinian type ticked tabby).

The Maine Coon breed still has an AOV class, so in theory the ticked cats should be eligible for registration but not eligible for competition for titles. This is likely why they are pets and not show or breeding cats!

^Sounds familiar, that's propably the exact same text which can be found on BSH standard too. (OT but I don't get it why they don't allow chocolates, lilacs and points on BSHs as they have them on their gene pool anyway, inherited from persians long ago).

Here are some ticked tabby Maine Coon photos I found:

Black Silver Ticked

Brown Ticked Torbie

They can be shown just not in CFA.

Ooohhh! Chester's coat looks just like the picture of the Black Silver Ticked MC you found! Except his nose is brick-red, not black.

Chester at 4 months old (with an attitude!)

Chester at 20 months

Gypsy at 20 months

Yep - we love our kitties, don't we?

Awww they're so pretty! Aren't Maine Coons the best? I have a solid black Maine Coon girl (Roxy.)

Thanks - They are wonderful. My 1st Maine Coon, Cowboy, was a brown classic tabby - he died a couple years ago, when he was about 16 years old. He was such a cool cat, we knew we wanted more!

Except from CFA the GCCF doesn't approve ticked tabbies. Ticked tabby is just as chocolate, lilac and colorpoint is thought to be a sign of outcrossing with other breeds which wouldn't be acceptable for a "natural breed".

I don't breed Maine Coons so I don't care which colors that are approved or not but I do see the point with trying to ensure that a natural breed is a natural breed and not a product of outcrossing with other breeds.
