Teary eyes

Help! - My cat gets teary eye once in a while for no apparent reason. One eye (either one) would get teary and he keeps it closed for a while. He seems fine otherwise. The vet didn't find any problem with the eye, but it's a recurring thing. Any ideas what it might be and what I can do to help?

My Carly has that problem and the vet diagnosed herpes. I've been giving her lysine with her wet food and it seems to be keeping it check. Though, I've noticed it will flair up when I'm battling my hay fever so I suspect she has some allergies also.

Sounds like a reaction to airborne allergens. That happens with both of my kitties, especially when the weather changes or a front comes through. As long as the drainage is clear, you don't need to worry about it. Just wipe with a gentle touch and keep the eyes dry. If the discharge turns to yellow, green, or some other color, then you need to see the vet.

Clyde gets that too, and I took him to the vet, and he was cleared of Herpes, and diagnosed with a blocked tear duct. He has had trouble for all his life I guess.

Strangely enough, after a course of antibiotics a couple months ago for an abcess in his side, his eye stopped acting up!
