So a woman calls the shelter today and wants to turn over 2 guinea pigs and a chinchilla. Long story short, I get the chinchilla. She drops him off in this cage that she bought for him, which is the exact cage I kept two females rats in. I need a bigger cage for him. I did some looking and found that a chinchilla needs a 30Lx29Wx18H min. Any thoughts as to where i may be able to find a decent cage at a decent price?

I have a 30 x 36 rabbit cage, used for 10 days to contain a active cat recovering from an amputation.
It is just a wire cage, I'm almost certain you would need to buy or make a proper floor for it to be safe for long term use, (I made her a mattress and washed it daily) but if you want it it's your's for whatever it costs to ship it. It folds to qbout 2 inches thick and is still in the original box.
PM me if you're interested.

Check your local www.freecycle.org.

It's a grassroots and entirely nonprofit movement of people who are giving (& getting) stuff for free in their own towns. It's all about reuse and keeping good stuff out of landfills.

I love these cages,I use them for rats. But they have a chinchilla section on it with the measurements and such of the cages. The cages are priced decently and even shipping is not that bad and I am in Canada,so if your in the USA I would assume shipping would be even cheaper since it is an American company.

No! Those guinea pig cage cubes are BAD for chinnies! I used one for a door on a cage once. My chinchilla stuck her head right through and got it very stuck! It was 11 at night. I had to call my sister to come hold her while I sawed through the wire with a dremel.

Chinnies prefer branches to shelves (think parrot perches), and love love love hammocks.

I'm kind of curious if you've solved the chinchilla cage problem yet.

Wire cages aren't good, the tiny wire squares on the tiers are great for getting their feet stuck in them and hanging them. (scary had it happen)

I bought my two chinchillas a Marshall Mansion, the cage stands taller than I do, has three teirs and plenty of room for them to run jump and whatever, its a ferret cage, but it worked very well, no one got anything stuck anywhere, and they lived in it for 2 yrs before finally passing (at ages 10 and 11) it was a $300 cage, but you could score one off of craiglist for $100.

just a thought. (I'd also get one of those edible huts too, mine loved them)
