Mods, feel free to move this as I wasn't sure where would be best to post this.

I took in a rescue cat in June. We didn't intend to keep him, but had decided that until the "perfect" home comes along he stays with us. It seems the perfect adopter has come along and will be by tomorrow to visit with him, during which time I intend to have her fill out an adoption contract to adopt him. I would like to know if my contract is adequate, if I'm missing anything... Any feedback would be appreciated, I want to do this right.
The contract reads as follows:

ADOPTION AGREEMENT

INFORMATION ABOUT ADOPTED ANIMAL:
Name: Finn
Breed: Domestic Medium Hair

Sex: Neutered

Date of Birth: Unknown, approximately 2 years old.

Color: Blue Eyed White

Other: It must be noted that this cat is deaf. His hearing impairment does not appear to affect him indoors in any way. However, due to his lack of ability to hear potential dangers, i.e. motor vehicles, dogs or other possible predators, it is imperative to his safety and well being that he be an indoor only cat.

ADOPTER'S AGREEMENT

•\tI agree that the cat is being adopted for myself and will not be sold, adopted, or given to another party._________

• The cat will live inside my home, not outdoors._________

•\tI agree that the cat will not be allowed outdoors without proper supervision, a secure harness and proper ID._________
\t
•\tI agree that I will not declaw the cat._________

•\tI agree to care for the cat in a humane manner and be a responsible cat guardian. This includes supplying adequate food, water, shelter, grooming, attention, and medical care._________

•\tI agree that if at any point I can not keep the cat, I will return him to Kristen or Jason Keen without requesting a fee._________

•\tI understand and agree that ******** make no guarantees about the cat's temperament and are not responsible for future damages or injuries caused by the animal._________

•\tI give ******** permission to call my home at any reasonable time to assure that the cat is being properly treated and cared for._________

•\tI agree to keep ******** informed of my current home address and phone number._________

ADOPTER'S INFORMATION:

Name: ___________________________
Address: _________________________________________ City, State: ___________________

Phone Number: _____________________ Email ______________________________________
Driver's License Number: ____________________________ License Plate: ________________
Veterinarian: __________________________
References: _________________________________, __________________________________

I agree that all statements I have made on this form are true. If it is found that any statements I have made on this form are not true the adopted cat can be confiscated and returned to *******

Good contract. One thing - in the special paragragh at the top you mention about being an indoor only cat.

However, in the statements below that you have them check/initial that he can be outside only under supervision - harness/leash. That's contridicting.

If you will be ok with supervision outside, you need to add that to the "indoor only" part. Change both to read "prefer indoor only, but will allow some outside time ONLY under supervision. This means a harness/leash or in a secure cat enclosure at all times if outside".

He has to be inside only because he is deaf, but I have a harness and lead and he likes to roll in he grass outside. The other end of the lead never leaves my hands though, and then he comes back in the house. I guess that's what I was trying to say in the contract.

Is this a better way to have the initialed points?

• The cat will live inside my home, not outdoors._________

•\tI agree that the cat may be allowed some outdoor time ONLY under proper supervision. This means the cat will never be left alone outdoors and will wear a secure harness/leash, or be in a secured cat enclosure, and will wear proper ID._________

I would also like to suggest a couple of changes:

• I agree to care for the cat in a humane manner and be a responsible cat guardian. This includes supplying adequate food, water, shelter, grooming, attention, and medical care._________

My suggestion: change "guardian" to "owner"

• I understand and agree that ******** make no guarantees about the cat's temperament and are not responsible for future damages or injuries caused by the animal._________

My suggestion: add "Other than the above notice regarding hearing, cat is in good health and all future medical costs are the responsiblity of the new owner."

I can understand why you would want the veterinarian name (ask for clinic name and maybe phone number) and references, but why are you asking for the driver's license number and license plate?

Because the shelter I worked at did?
Otherwise I really don't know.

Thanks, I hope it works out too. He's been such a good boy and I wish we could have kept him ourselves. We just knew the responsible thing was to find him a home since we already have 2 cats and a dog. He's been here 8 months already waiting for a new family so I'm sure my heart will be breaking tomorrow when he goes.
