We moved recently and bought curtains for all the rooms because we hate vertical blinds.

We kinda thought Stumpy would be the only one of our cats who would be naughty with curtains, and she's gone now

So we got nice curtains, with nice sheer panels behind them. Unfortunately Lily seems to like stretching up on the curtains and using them for balance when she chases the mosquitoes that we seem to be getting inside the house.

I guess our curtains won't last long...

I think curtains with cats are always a bad idea.

I buy mine on clearance in Wal Mart for the basement, where foster kitties live, as I know they have a short life.

i had (hense on the had bit hehe) beautiful burgandy long curtains in our bedroom i got them three weeks before i even knew about Sooty let alone having them, Flash was fine with them content with padding at the sation bed covers (yeah they didnt last long either) then fast forward a good few weeks and this goregous black kitten went tearing into the bedroom and scaled the curtains, i sharnt tell you what i intially called him as i saw him climbing then i shouted for blaine to come through and soots looked at us as if to say "its not me im not being naughty"

as he grew into the huge cat he is now he tried again and they nearly came down needless to say after his scare hes never been back up them or any other curtains

cats eh who'd have them

When Jake was little he used to do this but the water spray bottle worked in getting him to lose interest in the curtains at my house

The only problem I have ever had with curtains and my kitties is hair. Maia never touches them, either did my past kitties...except to get to their window perch which is essential for all kitties to have

I gave up on good curtains a looooooong time ago. Mine are too old to want to climb them, but if there is ever a flying bug in the house that lands on them, forget it - they're snagged.

I do a lot of cordless blinds and valances.

What can I say.....
after decades of destroyed curtains and bent horizontal blinds, I have finally decided that vertical blinds are perfect for cats.
I hope that you find a workable option, that you can live with, to shredded curtains.

That reminds me of a kitten that I got when I was in 2nd grade. My mom had these cheap plastic curtains, and the kitten would run across the room and take a flying leap at the curtains and swing, swing, swing. I named him Tarzan because of that. Tarzan went over the RB a couple of years after DH and I married. He was about 15 at the time. Poor boy survived a nasty UTI and other old age illnesses to die in the jaws of a big dog that got in our yard. He was too fat and slow to run or climb a tree. He was a good cat and my dad really loved him and he loved my dad.

I can honestly say none of mine have ever touched my curtains. Now the vertical blinds in the conservatory, Jack has chewed through the beading in several places that connects each blind at the bottom

Fortunately I have not had kitties climb my curtains but I hate the hair on them. I usually just get valances if anything.

I had some lovely kitten souvenirs from Mooch and Noodles on my old living room curtains! But Sarah I have got to say, God Bless you for moving while pregnant! I did it and had lots of help but it was still really exhausting!!

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
I bought curtains at Ollies for my living room and kitchen bay window. They are all snagged from GiGi the jungle cat having her psychotic episodes and her and Hercules have actually ripped the bay window curtain down *rod and all* from them playing thru the window with outside cat *he doesnt have a name just outside cat* I just fix it and hope they dont destroy them since I can never catch them playing in the curtains.

Few things you can try: empty coke can...add a few coins to it and put tape on the top - give is a loud shake anytime a kitty gets near the window (you could also use a can of compressed air too....the idea is to startle the kitty so that it associates that horrible noise with messing with your curtains...eventually they'll leave it alone!)

Another option is to put the curtains on a light tension rod---the first time one of them tries to climb it the tension rod will fall down (if it's a light one, it won't hurt the kitty) it'll be enough to scare the devil out of them climbing again in most cases. You could also get some cardboard and double sided tape...put double sided tap or contact paper on the top that faces up and line the area around the window with it for a few days- they will NOT like stepping on it and will learn to leave that area alone.

Mine never touch my curtains thankfully. I have however had to break many foster kittens in the past who did! Those techniques worked best for me.
