What's graphics card are you running? While an older one will be fine for the original parts of the game, the expansions require newer cards... or for you to turn just about everything off.

If you like MMORPGs, you'll probably like it. However it is set up so that if you want to take any larger bosses down that you have to join parties with other people and that means find a guild that isn't too full of drama.
There is a very social side of it.

The game itself is pretty fun. A lot to do and you can meet some really cool people while playing. The environment is still one of the best I have seen even with the graphics being 5 years old. It's not really flashy or full of awesome graphics but I can also play it on my subpar system without it needing a major overhaul.

I will say that where a lot of new players end up getting frustrated is the large gap between your fresh level 1 and the max level of 80. The really nice thing is that Blizzard made some really great changes so that you gain levels faster and it's not as tedious.

Leveling is pretty fast and they have a really good grouping interface that allows you to group with players from a bunch of different servers so you can run dungeons and interact with other players instead of mindlessly killing boars by yourself. Prior to this most people just quested until they hit their 70's and then were thrown into learning how to group.

If you are interested in it, you might as well download the free trial. There is no obligation and even the starting areas will give you a pretty good idea of the play style of the game. I don't know what the restrictions are for trial accounts but you won't be able to do somethings like group but it should show you if the game is for you.

But the graphics aren't truly 5 years old. As I already mentioned, each expansion adds graphics that push cards more and more. If, say, someone tries to play it with a nvidia 9500GT, a card that isn't that old, they will have issues. Turn up the details, and you need more graphics power.
Chances are you have a lot of the details and shadows off if you're not noticing anything or you have a higher end gaming card in your system. Be prepared for this year's expansion.

I'm hooked on this game. I play a druid which is a character where you can shapeshift into different forms including a Kitty and a Cheetah. I chose this character because of the whole getting to play as a kitty thing.

If you like MMORPG's then you might like this one. I must warn you though, there is no way to "beat" the game. But there are lots of never ending fun things you can do with your character. It is also a very social game, lots of interacting with other players. This can be frustrating at times though as other players do not seem to have a very high maturity level.

As far as graphics go, my laptop is old and can't handle them. So I have to turn everything down all the way and don't get to enjoy all the really pretty potential graphics it could have.

I suggest starting with their free trial and see if you like it. You can download a small trial version of the game that is much smaller memory wise straight off their website.

In the beginning its all about leveling up your character by getting experience through questing. The more experience your character gains, the more levels your character will gain. You can pick up quests in the game such as go kill x amount of this bad guy, or collect y amount of that. Then you turn it in for your reward which is some experience and some gold, sometimes a little something extra too. You travel through all kinds of different lands, some of which are very pretty, to complete your quests. You can choose which lands you want to visit as there are many to pick from.

After your character reaches the max level, then the game changes a bit. You no longer quest for experience, but you may still quest for gold if you like. At max level, the game becomes about getting better gear for your character so you can go on dungeon raids. For dungeon raids, you will most likely need a guild. This is where the game becomes very social as you will have to work with other guild members to kill raid bosses. Raid bosses take 10 or 25 players cooperating and coordinating themselves properly in order to kill a boss.

There are lots and lots of other things to do in the game of course but that was just a quick high level overview of the game so you can determine if its for you or not.

Some days it makes me so frustrated that its not worth it and I go find something else to do, other times its a lot of fun working with other players to kill a complicated raid boss. Personally I get a lot of entertainment out of it for only $15 a month and think its worth it. But I play it about 5 nights a week. If you don't play it often, then the subscription fee becomes a waste and not worth it IMO. Graphics are worth it if you have a newer computer that can handle it, otherwise there's not really anything special about the graphics if you have to run it on an older machine.

If you have graphics turned down too much you can't see the fun things like poison gas clouds.

I sometimes play on a computer that has runs on a integrated GPU Intel Q33 Express, and it runs with all of the settings turned down very seamlessly. That is the beauty of this game, you don't have to have a GTX 285 in order to enjoy the game play. Yes, if you want to run on Ultra settings with everything maxed out you would need a beefy card, but you don't lose anything if you don't.

Currently I run a Radeon HD 4650 512 (a card that runs about $60) on Good settings I get about 50 to 60 fps in Dalaran. 25 mans are another story, but for normal everyday game play a mid range card and even a decent onboard GPU will be fine.

I played a free trial of it and I liked it, but I don't think it's worth the money. It's not a game that I would pay thousands of dollars to play, like some people I know. A friend of mine has been playing it for a looong time. He's spent over $5000 on it. It's good, but not worth a monthly fee IMO. Either way, I don't think Blizzard needs any more money. They're currently making about $10 million a month just from WoW.

I really really really enjoy WoW but I thought I was spending too much time playing the game and not... going out... living life, etc. I thought too many nights were me on the couch, drinking a beer, playing the game.
That said, I've thought about going back to playing because I am currently working on socializing a kitty, so if I'm going to be in her room sitting on the floor, may as well be playing WoW and having fun.

I had soooo much fun playing it... but I just thought I was playing it too much. I think if you give yourself a limit on how much time to play and not let it take over your life, then you should try it! But if you find yourself playing the game and having to go to the bathroom, but holding for a couple hours as you are in a dungeon on a group raid for 3 hours at 4am and haven't answered any calls as you can't pick up the phone because you can't pause and don't want to die... then maybe you are too addicted.

It sounds like you've done that a few times. As long as you don't get to be that addicted, or as addicted as Stan, Cartman, and Kyle on South Park (what a great episode
), and you have a steady income, it's ok. Overall, it is a good game, just really pricey in the long run.

A 4650 is a decent card, though. It's not the best, but x6xx is the minimum you need for gaming. CPU and ram (couple gigs, at least, is best) matter a lot, too. It seems like ATI isn't supporting it anymore? You might want to check that and make sure you have the latest drivers backed up off comp somewhere as you'll have to reinstall windows eventually.

Again OP. List your computer's stats. It'll give you a good idea as to where you sit as far as gaming ability for WoW and other games. If you don't like spending money, look into the free MMORPGs. They won't be as high end as WoW, but you may find something you like.

almost 5 year player here
It's well worth it IMO. I'm not actively playing atm for financial reasons.

DH paid my CoH (City of Heroes) account because he needed someone to help him with some super group stuff. That is a fun MMORPG as well!! The character customization is wonderful. If you want to see screenshots of the two games pm me and I will give you a link to my myspace with lots of screenshots!!

I have a lvl 80 hunter on Farstriders with a pet Turtle named Torti, and I am very attatched to my Tort.

Be safe.

Haha... yes WoW can get very addicting. There have been nights when my friends will call and I had to tell them I was raiding and couldn't go out with them.

As for the subscription fee I look at it like this... can I do without one night a month of pizza delivery? That is really all the cost is. Some may balk at a subscription but the quality you get compared to some free games is much better.

I played it for a while. I liked the game just got tired of the guild and people bugging me. I have several characters, but only one level 70 or 80 (cant remember ...it's been a few months. It was the max level at the time. My hunter was my highest level, I also had a 20-30 Druid and a few lower levels. Like someone else said the social side of it can bug you. It's also frustrating if doing a gear run and someone ganks what you were there for and all the do is sell it. I chose the horde side b/c that is what my hubby's side was. Also I was told the alliance side was mostly young kids.

Try the 14 day trial and then go from there. If you don't like it you can always uninstall. Please keep in ming that you have to pick a server based on what type of play you want. I was on Gilneas as it was a player versus computer..you can still duel and get killed by enemy players if you are that type of zone.

I've been playing since beta so nearly 6 years now.
I still love the game and still log in daily, connection willing.
I'm logged in right now actually.
I play on a 5 year old computer with all gfx setting at medium with no issues.
Yes, it is a monthly pay to play system, but $15 a month is still cheaper than going to the movies or a club once a month and it takes no gas to get to it
