As best as I can figure the new wears off. Stupid people, cats are like Texas weaather, wait a while and they'll change.

My sphynx is actually the most active cat in the house.. she's always running and jumping and getting into things... I swear tho, someday she's going to fall and break a leg.. she's so clumsy, and she doesnt have claws to catch herself!

We came home without the him, they wanted to keep him overnight, I went there at 8 this morning to see him, and they said they will be keeping him at least until the close of today, possibly until tomorrow or longer. He has his foot wrapped right now, and they are giving him antibiotics, and pain medication.
If/when you make a page for him on here you should include how he came to you and how sick his declawing made him (and that it could have even killed him). There are people who pop up asking, and his story could be another good one to add to why it doesn't need to be done.

Did you get his paperwork from his neuter and declaw? Do you know if they did any pre-op blood test? I wonder if maybe that was skipped.

I did get all the paperwork, I didn't really understand much, Apparently he was nuetered, declawed, and given all of his shots in 1 night. I asked the vet how they could not of known that he was anemic, and he told me that they could of just skipped it altogether. I find that crazy to believe. How can you do such a serious surgery without checking to make sure that everything is okay?

Bernoulli is home tonight, he is doing alot better, actually playing with Dh, and his big brothers Baxter and Binx and the laser light right now.

He isn't black! I don't know what to do with him! Lol I have never had a non-black cat.... Other than his fur color, he fits right in.

Pre-op blood work for spay, neuters, dentals - and I assume declawing, is often optional. People can skip doing it to save money. Often you get the choice of the cat getting fluids and even pain medication, too.

And you do the only thing you can with him. Love him. Good to know that the others accept Bernoulli.

Sadly, bloodwork is often optional and depending on if they do in house bloodwork, means another office visit and additional cost - something probably unlikely that th eoriginal owner would pay for.

I am glad you have some answers and sounds like your vet is doing a good job

I paid the extra to have Attitude's blood tested for her spay. Honestly I did it because of the leukemia, I wanted to make sure she was still healthy and not suffering from anything due to the leukemia. When I have the money to do Nuts I'll get his done as well. I can't say I wouldn't still have it done if they didn't have leukemia but I might think about it more since they are so young. I know how I am, I want every precaution taken, so I know I'd still have it done. Also, I don't want to fix a sick cat, they are already stressed due to being sick, the added stress of surgery could kill it. I know the vet makes it mandatory after a certain age and in certain situations, but it wasn't for Attitude or for Nuts when I get him done.

It was the same for fluids. I knew she didn't need them but as I said I want every precaution taken. I'd feel guilty if something were to happen to one of them if I didn't do everything in my power to make sure they made it through surgery ok.

I didn't have a choice on pain meds, they weren't optional and I was told to give them to Attitude. I honestly had never even thought about them, I had never had an animal given pain meds post spay. Spaz(my RB cat with my now ex husband) wasn't, Paul said neither Maude(RB) nor Molly(his RB dog) nor Abby(my RB Old English Sheepdog.) When they were done might have had something to do with it. Molly(chihuahua/ Jack Russel terrier mix) was at least 17 when she crossed the bridge in July and she was done when she was less than 2(after being dumped at the shelter with her litter of puppies) so you can do the math, Abby was 11 1/2 when she crossed the bridge in Nov 2006 and her spay was done in 1995, Paul can't remember when he got Maude or her age(I was the one who knew around how old Molly was, she was ancient), just that she was 1 to 1 1/2 when he got her and I know it was early 2000's, at the very least 6- 7 years ago. Spaz(RB 2002, she was at least 3 or 4, my MIL was watching her while we moved and she somehow got out and was never seen again, she was such a sweet cat I hope someone else took her in as their pet) got her spay and declaw(behavioral reasons, I've explained it all before) in prolly 2000 or 2001, so all were at least about 10 years ago or so. Obviously they finally figured out post surgery they hurt so they now give pain meds(same vet that did Abby in 1995 did Attitude a few months ago.) I also swear that we took care of all these pets until their deaths and as you can tell all except Spaz and that was an accident, lived long healthy lives

Spaz actually was never a biter and getting declawed didn't change that and she was done for behavioral reasons, getting stitches more than once from being attacked by your cat isn't cool. One hospital even make a cop come talk to me because they thought my boyfriend(now my ex-husband) was abusing me. I told the cop that if I was being abused I'd come up with a lot better story than the cat did it.

Now, I know that Attitude and Nuts(and even Maude before she stopped eating) are fed a good premium diet, and therefore should not have any issues due to diet, like anemia. Who knows what the heck her SIL was feeding that poor cat.

I'm glad to hear Bernoulli is on the mend. I won't say what I think should happen to your SIL since I can't say it without using a ton of 4 letter words and a few that are quite longer.

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
I just read this whole thread from start to finish. You are doing an amazing thing taking care of this kitty...Thank you!!!!

If it would have been my SIL that did this I would have gone to her house and stomped her down to the size she needs to be. Both my SILs know how I feel about cats and Im the crazy cat lady in my family and my BFs family so they know that Im psychotically fiercely protective over cats! Even the outside cat that I dont like, I still feed him and take care of him, now if only he wasnt smarter than the average "bear" Id trap him and neuter him. But he is a mean son of a gun and Im not getting anywhere near him to try and catch him in a carrier!!!)

I hope your new kitty gets better and btw I love the name Binx. I always wanted a black cat named Binx. Hocus Pocus is one of my favorite movies!

I am so happy Bernoulli has found a loving home! I rescued a cat 25 years ago in a similar situation. Her name was Dee Dee and she was the sweetest kitty who never had a biting problem even though her prior owner declawed her. She was only six months old when I rescued her from a shelter, she still was in bad shape from an infection from the declaw, but she fully recovered and lived to 20 years old without any health problems.

She was the only cat I ever had that was declawed. I had other cats she lived with that had their claws and they lived together without problems. Lucky for her they only declawed her front claws so when she would play with the other cats she would always kick them with her back paws when she had enough.

I wish you and Bernoulli best wishes, hopefully he will recover quickly and live a long and happy life!

Agreed. Best wishes for you and little Bernoulli. I hope me makes a full recovery. And at least your SIL won't be getting any more cats from the Humane Society.

I was just going to mention that. The clinic I go to always has really high estimates for surgery compared to others in the area, but things like pre-op bloodwork and pain medications are not optional.

I have 2 cats currently that were declawed by previous owners. Nabu has had some issues. He has very advanced arthritis for his age (it was very evident on xray) and had some regrowth in one toe last spring/summer that had to be removed. My declawed cats are a little clutzier than Lola, mostly because if they slip they can't catch themselves. So we have kept that in mind when we built our current cat tree and for any future cat trees we build. It was really sad watching them try to do what Lola did when she was under a year old--flinging herself at something and sticking like velcro. They would try and it wouldn't work for them.

Most importantly, I have to use a soft sand-like litter (which most cats prefer anyway) for them. I think the litters that have big pieces of clay(or whatever else) must feel like walking over a gravel road/driveway barefoot for declawed cats. And I've noticed some of the "puzzle" type toys on the market must assume all cats have claws. We have 2 toys that because of their design the guys don't play with (they get frustrated because they can't get the toys out). Lola can play with those toys because she can hook a toy with 1 claw and move it around or get it out.

I'm glad he is doing better. that he heals right up. I love the new name too.

Maybe I missed it, but if Bernoulli isn't black, what color is he?

And how did you choose the name Bernoulli? That's a name that is near and dear to pilots and hotrodders, you know...

He is a tiger striped kitty. He is beautiful. I will post some pictures when he is healed...

I have only 1 requirement for my cats names. They have to start with a B. Lol. IDK why. I think it fits better on the Christmas cards, we send them to our vet, the humane society, and with all of our animal related donations..

Baxter - Binx - and Bernoulli.

Dh picked Bernoulli comes from the Bernoulli principal....DH is training to be a pilot.

Unfortunately, the cruelty laws in South Dakota are practically non-existent, and those that do exist are not enforced. So there's not much point in pursuing any kind of legal proceedings against your SIL (unless she lives in NE, IA, or MN). Nothing would happen anyway. At least the Humane Society won't let her adopt from them anymore, though of course there's no shortage of free kittens for the taking. Hopefully she won't get any more pets.

Poor Bernoulli, he's having a rough time! And this is why declawing is illegal in the rest of the world...

He sounds much better now playing with his brothers, it's nice they all get along!

Can't wait to see photos

Lacey, I just saw Bernoulli's picture on his cat page... what a cutie!! He looks like he's doing great. Kudos again to you for all you've done for the little guy. He's a lucky kitty.
