Cammy was named by DH, after a street fighter character. Abbey was named for the Beatles album, Abbey Road. I wanted to call her Lucy, for the Beatles song but DH didn't like it. My outside kitties, their names just came to me.

Whenever I see you mention Neko I always think of Neko Case. She's an indie musician, and I have a pretty big girl crush on her...

Had to reply to this one. We just got a new family member.

The kitty that died in August was named Mistoflees. He was "black from his head to the tip of his tail". He was 17 and was the nicest kitty we'd ever had.

Sneaky Pie will be 9 in April. She's named after Sneaky Pie Brown, Rita Mae's books are just really cute. I got to go to a book signing of hers one year. Though my Sneaky Pie doesn't look anything like her Sneaky Pie.

HollyHeart is the baby. 4 months old- came to us from a friend who found a pregnant momma cat and took her in. HollyHeart is also all black. Which concerned me, I didn't want a Mistoflees the second. But my friend was kind of concerned as to what was going to happen if she couldn't find homes for all 4 kittens (she kept mama and a baby), and she wanted them to go to good homes.

We like doing the literary thing (though both of my kids play strings so at one point there was Berlioz from the Aristocats LOL). Instead they decided to come up with something from the Warriors series of books.

I guess as the cats age they go through a progression. From a "kit" to something else and finally a "heart". The ones that die are called something else- they put that last name on Mistoflees. I told them there was NO WAY we were changing the name of the cat every 6 months you pick something, and whatever I write down at the vet office is the name that sticks. So HollyHeart it was.
HollyHeart's a black cat in the book. I liked DarkPaw too, but they said "But that's a BOY!"
She's getting fixed- so IMHO the sex of the cat doesn't even matter

Though I'm in nursing school and there was one cat that was a "medicine cat", but the kids wouldn't name her after that cat b/c it was the wrong color. A tabby or something.

My mom drives me crazy because she constantly refers to Holland as "he". I have corrected her a number of times, once she said "well she's been spayed, so he, she, it - it doesn't matter!".

It matters to me!! Don't call my girl "it"!!

The only cats that have come into our household already named were Gryphon and Nibs. They kept their names. Everyone else has told us her name when she was ready. It doesn't take long, as a rule, although Samantha was a bit of a tomboy and allowed us to labour under the misapprehension that she was a boy, until the first vet visit.

Squeaky was formerly Mitze, but she didn't answer to it, so we didn't feel bad about changing it. The husband and I couldn't agree on a name for a few weeks after we adopted her, so I unilaterally chose Squeaky. She squeaks when she jumps (ok, more like a grunt, but it sounds squeaky to me), ergo, she is Squeaky.

I name all my cats after figures in Greek Mythology, I have a list and the name that's next is the one the new kitty gets. It always seems like the names really fit tho, either that or it's a case of suggestion
Like Hades for example, really is from the underworld
little devil! Pandora, aka, Pandy, is black and white like a panda, and within 2 weeks of joining the family she chewed an electrical wire and fried herself, or as I like to say, she opened Pandora's box
Chaos caused quite a lot of chaos when he blocked last spring and Nemesis is the nemesis of all the other cats
Atlas may not carry the world on his shoulders, but he looks like he has a globe in his belly

This made me giggle in sympathy because when I announced Tolly's name, my mother insisted on calling him "Tully". And she had all the sibs saying it too. I kept saying mom, his name NOT Tully, it's TOLLY (pronounced Tahlly) and then she would say well it should be Tully. LOL!

I don't know why, no one has ever told her what to name or not name HER cats!

Here are the cats I've named (by their "generations," with their nicknames). We still have two of the 3rd generation and the two 4th-generation kittens now. Our cats' names are growing more complicated over the decades! And they morph over time into scores of even more outrageous nicknames that we keep to ourselves.

Harold Magee
Harris Winfield (Harry)

Franoushe (Frannie)
Truffalo
Margalo

Snictoria (Snicky)
Snalbert (Bertie)
Bunnelina (Bunny)

Possumus P. Passamaquoddy (Possum, Possy, Mr. Maquoddy)
["Passamaquoddy" was his shelter name, since he's quasi-Maine Coon]
Wendelina Pantherina (Wendy or Wen-wen)
[I named her after a poisonous mushroom; she retaliated by getting ringworm!]

A friend named her orange tabby Agent Orange. I loved that!

When I got the girls, they were 7 weeks old. They were hiding behind a small condo we had got them. I was laying on the floor looking at them and asking what their name was. I had suggested several names to them but they totally ignored me. But when I said Rusty and Dusty, both perked up and looked right at me. Therefore, I figured that they named themselves.

Even though Rusty is a boy name, it fits my Rusty Girl. She is big and acts like a boy sometimes. Dusty is dainty and sweet.

DH named the two strays we feed. He calls one Fuzzybutt. She has a lot of long fur. The other he calls Miss Piggy as she is always eating. They spend the day in the apartment sleeping and eating. They go out in the afternoon. I am still trying to find forever homes for them.

Other cats I have had over the years...

Paws - Barely remember him but he was black with 6 toes on each from paw.

Rover - Brother named him

The original Rusty and Dusty - brother and sister orange kitties. Rusty had a 1 inch tail, Dusty no tail. Dusty was PTS at a young age. She had been taken in to get an abortion and spayed. Found out she was not pregnant but had peritonitis that had eaten most her stomach and intestines. Vet was and older gentleman and was extremely surprised as he thought she was PG. He hadn't seen this since he was in school. He called my mom at work who gave permission for her to be PTS.

Bones - Brother named him. He used to call me that but our dad would call him Bonehead when he did, so he named the cat that so he could get away with calling me that. She was black longhair with a small white spot on her chest

Cotton - Bones' daughter, longhair white pointed cat.

Tarzan - male tabby I got when I was in 2nd grade

One Nut - Only had one.. um... you know.

Kiki - former feral that I tamed and then DH stole her heart. She was by everyone who met her. She was PTS at age 19 due to kidney failure.

Bonnie and Clyde - Brother and sister. Black and white. Clyde went over the bridge, Bonnie rehomed when we lost the house.

Buddy, Sissy and their offspring, Scamper, Princess and Stinker. Rehomed when we lost the house.

Most of our cats have come from shelters so we never knew their original name. We try to give them a name that fits their personality or name them after a character we like.

Our 2 present cats:
Neely was named after Neely O'Hara from the movie, Valley of the Dolls because she is a lush and constantly drinks out of the dog's water bowl.

Gizmo reminds us of a little gremlin from the movie, Gremlins.

I'm not sure I'm the cat owner you had in mind when you mentioned best cat names
, but here goes:

Siamie came from the Humane Society with no name that I know of. I wanted to call her Persimmon, but DH vetoed that and named her Siamie instead, because she looks like a long haired Siamese.

Speck was adopted from the animal shelter. I was debating on naming him Speck or Butterbean. He has spots and the name fits his personality so well. Speck was also the name of Pee Wee's dog in "Pee Wee's Big Adventure".

Daisy was adopted from the animal shelter. DH went to get her and I hadn't yet seen her when I was asked to pick out a name. "Something she'll know," DH said. So I chose Daisy, after the cow my father's family had when he was a little boy.

Marshmallow was a stray who showed up at DH's office. When DH would mention "that black and white cat", I would say "You mean Marshmallow?" The name stuck, and when we brought him home, we kept it. It's a long name and it took him a long time to learn it. Now he responds to Mars, Marsh, Martmellow, and many other variations of his name. He was named after the Stay-Puff Marshmallow Man that tried to destroy the city of New York in "Ghostbusters". I have a thing about that movie.

Trapped in the catroom! ;o)
Hercules was named by me when he was born in my moms barn. He was the only long haired cat out of all the litters (and no long haired cats are ever at their house) he was also unique because he has giant patches of grey with stripes and spots in the giant patches so he was my baby from day one and as soon as I was allowed to get a cat for inside I called my mom right away and told her to pack his butt up and bring him over and he as been my hunka hunka Hercules ever since.

Fatman was originally named Bubba but when we adopted him BF took one look at him and said that he is a Fat Man and since then he has been called Fatman. He also answers to Big Kahuna and thinks we are calling him as soon as the microwave beeps or the stove cooks something..LOL!!! Hes my tubby butt!!!

Gidget was named after the ditzy blonde Gidget in those 60 movies! I spent some quality time with her when we brought her inside and she was just so lovey dovey and goofy that Gidget came to mind. She rarely ever answers to her name but if you look at her and say Awww ders my G-Boo-Boo kitty puss the cutest kitty in the whole world she will come running chirping up a storm making her flirty eyes at you.

Eventually when I am allowed to have more cats and hopefully its when we have a bigger house I want to start a car theme with naming cats. My next naming choices are Dart, Cuda, Nova, Duster, Chevelle, and Mustang. Im going to start naming cats after all the classic cars BF has redone for his dad.

When I was seven years old elderly neighbors of ours were moving to an assisted living facility and couldn't take their poodle with them, so we took her in. Her name was Gidget and she became MY dog pretty instantly. She was very sweet, very loving. She was the first pet I really had to say goodbye to, she lived until I was 17 (actually I think she was around 17 too) and my parents made the decision to put her to sleep. She was diabetic, had lost most of her teeth and just wasn't happy anymore.

What I didn't like was introducing her to new people, because my name is Bridget. You have NO idea how many times I had to explain that I DIDN'T name her trying to be cute with rhyming names...
