So late Thursday night I noticed all the signs of Teddy being blocked. I had my boyfriend take him to the vet as soon as they opened on Friday morning. They unblocked him, gave him fluids, and ran all the tests. He came home today, but I couldn't pick him up myself, because I was working. They gave me prazosin to help open up his urethra more to make it easier for him to urinate. They were supposed to give him Clavamox to prevent infection from the catheter, but they forgot it and there is no way for me to contact them until tomorrow. (you would think after paying them over $1,700 the least they could do is give me all the medication I need)

Anyway, Teddy seems to be acting normal. However, he is still going to the litter box frequently and licking himself in that area. Is this normal?

He might be blcoking up again.
You need to watch him.
I had cat with bladder problems for 2 years.
The only thing that stopped it was her being but on Baytril forever.
I also lost 2 males to blackage.

I would ask them for the Clavamox tomorrow. I hope your cat will continue to improve.

He is peeing a little bit every time he's going in the box... I just want him to feel better. I've been so worried about him. He's eating and drinking okay, which is a good sign. I really hate this FLUTD thing.

It is very hard to stop once it starts.
My sisters cat had it also and had surgery.
They put him on C/D and it has been a year and he is fine.
Make sure you get the clavamox tomorrow.

I'm sorry to hear about Teddy, that's very scary, but good job getting him the veterinary attention he needed in time.

His bladder and urethra are still very sore and irritated, and this makes him feel as though he has to go pee all the time. So he keeps hurrying to the litter box and sqeezing out bits of pee.

I'm surprised the vet did not give you a few days worth of a pain reliever, usually buprenex, (NO metacam) to help reduce the pain and inflammation, and subsequently the stress associated with the pain.

When you pick up the antibiotic I would insist on some pain medication for him too.

Questions to ask your vet: What is the cause of this blockage?

If crystals ... what kind (struvite or oxalate)?

Should he be on prescription diet now?
Please keep us updated on Teddy.

Urinary tract problems are VERY common once a male cat is neutered. I've heard many cases like yours. Unfortunately, you may just have to keep him on special care the rest of his life, off and on or full time. I wish you luck, and hope Teddy gets better.

Teddy seems to being doing MUCH better today. I got some samples of C/D... but how much do I feed him of it? I usually free feed dry (Chicken Soup for the Cat Lovers Soul) in addition to wet twice a day, but the vet recommended he be wet only.

Yeah, I'm afraid you need to put the days of free-feeding dry food behind you. When Thufir blocked up and got put on the C/D is when I had to stop as well. After that, I had to separate him from the other cats at meal time. If the vet is OK with giving him regular wet food then they can eat that together, although obviously you can't free feed wet.

My cat Beeba is coming off crystals. He was on vet ordered s/d for three months. He would not eat the wet s/d, so we went to the dry. I am not thrilled with dry, but have to realize it is the medicine he needs in it. He will go on c/d by the end of the month.

He free feeds on it. I believe free feeding keeps their urine at a more constant level of acidity than feeding a couple times a day. But check with your vet.

I find that an automatic water system is wonderful. One of the most important things to know is increased water consumption is imperitive! It keeps them urinating and there is less time for the crystals to grow.

So increased water and the right food are more than half the battle. It is a drag to contend with these horrible things!!

I would ask your vet how much food your cat should get every day. I hope he continues to improve.

Depending on Teddy's size and weight my guess would be one to one and a half of the 5.5 oz cans of c/d a day.

Feed in scheduled meals.

Plus you can add a little water to the canned food, which will help fill him up, and get more water into him, which is very important.

Wish I could get Mazy to eat the canned c/d, but she refuses. I think I would have better luck if Hills Prescription would sell the c/d in 3 oz cans. She'll eat part of a can, but then refuse it after it's been opened and refrigerated, even though I warm it up. She's not normally finicky so I know she really doesn't like it, it must change a bit once air hits it.

The vet called me with the result of his blood work and urine culture. When he left on Sunday they redid all the blood test and they found he still had some elevated levels. (Something that is supposed to be around 35, was 115 on Friday, and down to 50-something on Sunday) I'm bringing Teddy back on Monday to do another blood test to see if the levels have continued to come down. Hopefully there is no kidney damage.

Teddy's urine culture revealed a UTI resistant to Clavomax (which he is on now). Unfortunately there is a blizzard outside so I won't be able to pick up the new prescription until tomorrow.

Teddy seems to be doing better each day. His personality is back in full force and he's not going to the litter box as frequently. I've also moved his water fountain into my bedroom (where he is most of the time) to encourage him to drink more.

Let's hope things keep going well for my baby.

Good luck with your baby - my guy had struvite crystals, had a round of antibiotics (batril) and a pain killer shot, and he's on Hills CD wet & dry (Dante just doesn't care for wet all that much). I mention that in case your boy just hates wet for whatever reason; there are dry versions of the prescription foods, if necessary. There are also lines other than Hills in case that's not a winner.

Good job on moving the water fountain - if that helps get more water in him, yay!

And, yes, your weather is horrendous - please don't endanger yourself getting to the vet. Your boy needs his momma!
